Songs in the Dark

He had left her.

Her soul darkened until there was only one fading note in the silence.

Hope.

She thought back to that night. She should have known. Without thinking, she turned her radio on. The volume was surprisingly loud.

"I'm only gonna break, break, your, break, break, your heart…"

Sakura would have jumped in surprise, but she was drained of

almost all emotion. These days, she just let her Inner take over. Actually,

compared to her Inner, Sakura was even more cold and detached. The

song on the radio continued.

"Hey, and I know karma's gonna get me back for being so cold,"

"Like the big, bad wolf I'm born to be bad and bad to the bone,"

"If you fall for me I'm only gonna tear you apart,"

"Even from the start…"

Sakura realized how ironic it was for that song to be playing, but

ignored it. It was probably a coincidence, anyway.

The phone rang and Sakura picked it up.

"Hello, pink-haired brat anywhere?" It was Naruto.

"Right here, Naruto." Sakura rolled her eyes.

"Listen, I know I've been kinda.. avoiding you since the…" he trailed

off. "…incident, but you wanna grab some ramen, usual place, just

like old times? Shino and Neji are gonna be there, and if you want, I'll

call Hinata, too. I think she'd be happy to see you out and about, for a

change." Naruto still couldn't see the Hyuga's obvious affection for him.

"Sure! Meet you there!" Sakura said. Kami…what have I

gotten myself into…

She ran down the stairs and out the door. It was when she reached

the market that she remembered something: She forgot where "the usual

place" was. She waited a few seconds, though, and sure enough, one of

Shino's bugs arrived and led the way.
