You ever wonder?
Fights were nothing new for Eliot but the after effects were for Nate.
They had been.. well, they'd been doing their own thing for a few months now and he was still getting used to the up close and personal views he got of the damage done.
Blood and bruises, scratches and cuts.
It seemed like every night Eliot came home with a new one and tonight was no different as he walked out on the balcony where Eliot was sitting with a beer and black eye.
"Here," His freezer had quickly been filled with ice packs but a bag of peas had been choosen for the sensitive spot instead. "see if you can't get the swelling to go down."
"Thanks" Eliot offered a slight smile as he took the bag but with one look it was tossed to the side.
The silence that settled was fairly quiet seeing as they were in the city but it was welcome as he settled into the spot next to Eliot. A glance to the sky showed that the stars were nearly visible and if he focused hard enough he could even make out a few but that wasn't where his attention stayed as he turned to Eliot.
He seemed to be deep in thought as he absently peeled at his bottles label and Nate figured he was probably thinking about what they could have done differently today.
"A penny?" He offered simply and it did its job of grabbing Eliot's attention. "If you want?" He wouldn't make him share if he didn't want to but he'd listen if he did.
Eliot's look was appraising as he set his beer down but after a minute something shifted in his eyes and he with it in his seat. "You ever wonder how important a choice is? How much of a difference it would make if you could go back and change just one thing?"
"All the time," It was no secret between them that they had their fair share of regrets. "but then you're left wondering what you would change?"
"And if the change would really be for the better." He had asked himself this exact question many a time over the years but he could never come up with a satisfactory answer.
That left Nate with a head full of memories as he thought about how things might be different if he could go back and change his mind about something. But what would it be? "Would you risk it? Knowing everything you know would you go back and try for a different future if you could?"
Nate's words were contemplated carefully but eventually he shook his head. "Naw,..." He didn't protest as Nate reached over and helped himself to his nearly full beer. "with my luck I'd end up worse off." Nate snorted and he smirked, they both knew how likely a possibility that could be. "But seriously, all things considered I like just where I am right now."
There was the tiniest of hints sitting in Eliot's eyes and he was quick to pick up on it, words were indeed overrated. "Me too."
He didn't say a thing as Eliot stretched his knee out till it was touching his nor did Eliot as he placed a hand atop of it. "But still..." Eliot sighed out as he returned his attention to the nights sky. "I wonder."
