The Death of Avatar Aang
Aang woke in the dead of night,
The voice of Roku in his ear.
'Now's the time of your final fight,
To save all those whom you hold dear.'
A chill creeping down his spine,
Aang grimly rose to face his fate.
Knowing that Roku sent a sign,
He went into the Avatar State.
Bright blue light shone from his eyes.
His airbending tattoos, they glowed.
Donning his robes, Aang sighed,
Fiercely wishing he need not go.
'What is it, Aang?" his wife stirred,
Raising her head from sleep's embrace.
"A storm is brewing," Aang returned,
His eyes locked on Katara's face.
'I love you,' Aang said to his wife,
Katara of the Water Tribe.
'I love you too,' Katara cried.
'Please, return to me alive!'
Their lips met in a frantic kiss,
And Aang knew it would be the last.
So he clung to her, lip to lip,
Then faced the storm's icy blast.
Steel grey clouds swirled in the sky.
The sea boiled, frothed, and foamed.
On his glider, Aang did fly,
To combat the storm, alone.
From the choppy sea, so black,
Did arise a massive wave.
Aang struggled to turn it back,
Republic City to save!
His glider shredded by the wind,
He threw all his skill into the fray.
But the wave, it would not bend.
Midair, Aang closed his eyes to pray.
He thought of his love, and his friends,
And the children had by all.
He thought of the people whose lives depend
On the Avatar's strength – To never fall.
He could not fail. He would not!
He fought against the wave anew!
At last he brought it to a halt!
Then lightning blew him through.
People cheered on the banks,
As the tidal wave melted away.
But Katara screamed her husband's name,
Watching him drop into the bay.
She wept, she cried, a world apart,
Even as the sky did clear.
For Katara knew, in her heart,
Aang would not return to her here.
They found his body on an island
Just beyond the city shore.
And there was a somber silence,
For Avatar Aang was no more.
