This story takes place during Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood episode 64 when Roy is placed in the hospital after the final battle and he has no eye sight. Risa is in the same room as him and this is before he got that visit from Dr. Marcoh and receives the philosopher's stone.
"Lieutenant," Mustang whispered. "Are you awake?"
Mustang felt absolutely venerable without his sight. He could deal with it though, all because he had Hawkeye by his side. He cherished his lieutenant very much.
"Yes, I am here, Mustang."
"It's been bothering me since Father had been destroyed. I'm about to become the Fuhrer of Amestres."
"Yes, you are, but it has been what you have been working towards all this time, hasn't it?"
"Yes, but it seems all too real. What I have worked for, for the past few years, is finally within my grasp and- and-"
"You just need to grab it," Hawkeye finished the kernel's sentence.
"Exactly." Mustang never really paid it much attention but Hawkeye always seemed to know exactly what he was trying to get out.
"Lieutenant."
"Yes?"
"I don't think I can do it."
"What do you mean?" Hawkeye sat up in her hospital bed. "What can't you do?"
Alarmed by the sound of rustling sheets, Mustang sat up too. "I don't think I can become the Fuhrer."
"What?" Hawkeye asked, alarmed. "Of course you can! It's the whole reason you became a State Alchemist, was it not?"
"Even if I were to somehow regain my eyesight, I doubt anyone would pay me any respect. I am one of the State Alchemists who took hundreds of lives. No one would sit quietly under a killer. I don't know what to do…."
At that moment, the clouds in the sky parted and the bright moonlight shined through the window. That was the first time Hawkeye got a good look at Mustang since he lost his sight. He dark gray eyes were clouded with worry with the corners glistening. It was then that Hawkeye realized that he was crying. Hawkeye was the closest person to Mustang yet she had never seen him cry before.
"It will be all right," Hawkeye said, trying to console the kernel. She then got up from her bed a walked over to Mustang's bed, sat down on the side of it, and put her arm around his shoulder.
"Lieutenant, what are you doing?" Mustang asked, startled.
"Give up the tough guy look, it doesn't suite you," Hawkeye whispered, as she put her head on his shoulder.
"Lieutenant….." Mustang murmured.
"Get some sleep. We can figure it out tomorrow. Every day is a fresh start, right?" Hawkeye said as she got off the side of Mustang's bed and started towards her own.
"Alright," Mustang said as he started to lie back down.
"Oh, and before I forget," Hawkeye said, halfway back to her bed.
"Wha-?"
Before Mustang could even ask, Hawkeye was back the side of his bed, bent down, with her lips on his left cheek. Just then, Mustang could feel his cheeks go a little red.
"Good night, Colonel," Hawkeye said as she headed back to her bed.
When Hawkeye was back in her bed and it seemed as though she was asleep, Mustang whispered "Good night, Risa."
