Okay, so this is my first fanfiction (be nice). I'm sorry about all the grammar faults. English is not my first language, so it would be extremely helpful if I could get a few pointers on what I've done wrong. : 3
Enjoy! :D
Prologue:
The night was cold and the icy wind bit and clawed at my hair and dress. I looked down, and immediately wished I hadn't. The dark water glittered maliciously under me. Nausea hit me like a truck, and I felt myself swaying slightly.
I used my toes to grip the bridge railing more tightly and spread out my arms to get a better balance. Adrenalin flowed in my veins, and my pulse raged.
My knees shook, but I steeled myself and started to inch myself to the left, towards the closest lamppost.
The streetlights reflected in the river game me a pretty good guess how far up I was. If I fell now I would be crushed against the water surface. I would die, but for some reason I couldn't stop grinning.
My shoulders shook as small hysterical chuckles escaped me. Oh shit I'm laughing, why am I laughing? This isn't funny. I'm terrified!
I could already feel my feet slipping under me, as the chuckles turned into a wild hysterical laughter. The lamppost was just a few centimeters away from my fingertips.
All I could think was; I need to stop laughing or I'm going to die.
I took one final step, with my hand reached out in front of me, and finally got a grip of the steel.
My knees almost gave out under me but I used a last effort to pull myself to it, then carefully sat down on the railing and wrapped my arms around it.
Tears ran down my cheeks like rivers and blurred my vision. The city lights blurred together to a single large mass of rainbow-colored lights.
I sat there for what felt like a long time, but was probably just a few minutes, wildly laughing and crying, as I hugged the lamppost with my life, and waited for the moment of madness to end.
Finally I started to calm down somewhat and loosened slightly on my grip.
My hands and feet had started to numb with the cold. I sneezed. I didn't dare to loosen my grip on my only lifeline so I wiped my nose on my forearm. I would never be able to use this dress again; the rust stains wouldn't be removable from the light yellow linen. Tough at the moment I didn't care all that much. I glanced behind me towards the street.
It was empty.
I hadn't expected anything else; the bridge was under reconstruction, which was probably also why no one had tried to stop my little stunt.
The railing was around ten feet, so I couldn't just jump down. I´d have to climb, like I did on my way up.
Reculantly, I bent down so I was lying on down on the railing, letting go of the lamppost as I did so. I twinned my legs around the railing, and was just about to heave my self down when I heard a voice shouting behind me.
"Are you completely out of your mind? Get down from there!"
The left over adrenalin still made me extremely jumpy so as I whipped my head around to catch a glance at the intruder I lost my grip and fell.
Oh no, NONONONONONONONO!
A construction worker ran towards me, his eyes and mouth was open in horror. No doubt I mirrored his expression. But I only got brief glimpse of him and then I passed under the bridge. The most horrifying thing was that I didn't just directly crash into the dark waves, I had time to think as I fell. Time to just fall and knowing that I was going to die no matter what, this was it.
Oh God no, please, I'm sorry mom. I'm sorry dad.
Tears leaked out of my eyes and trailed in the air above me. I flanged my arms and legs around in a grotesque imitation of a bird, looking for something to hold on to even as I knew there was nothing.
My yellow sundress flapped around my legs and my hair whipped my face.
I don't want to die…
The last thing I saw was my hand, dirty with rust, reaching for the stars above.
Then dark.
