sea, sky, earth and flame

The sea breathed within him, harsh and deep and threatening. It pulsed, its tide rising and falling with the boom-boom-boom of his heart. His eyes were green like the waves of the ocean; his hair black like the sea's darkest depths. With every breath he took, the sea breathed also, echoing his every move.

Percy Jackson was the sea, and the sea was he.

The thunder and the clouds and gods, the lightning. It was volatile, over-arcing, constant and yet ever-changing as the four winds. The sky was a companion to many a hero, just as she was. It was a leader, a scout, a hunter, just like her. The sky was a living, breathing entity, with a will of steel and a mind of its own.

Thalia Grace was the sky, and the sky was she.

The earth was slow, taking its time before making decisions, reaching out its thick, rooted fingers and grasping onto every living thing it could reach. It was unpredictable, made up of so many different things. Sometimes it nurtured, loved, caressed; other times, it murdered, strangled, killed whatever it could get its soiled hands on.

Nico diAngelo was the earth, and the earth was he.

Fire. Perhaps the most dangerous of the four, so full of heat and passion and blazing desire. Anything could fuel it, and it was a treacherous enemy once crossed. But fire could also be a friend, an ally; a saviour in times of bitter cold, a light in the darkest places. Fire was strength, and safety, and danger.

Annabeth Chase was the fire, and the fire was she.

Together, sea, sky, earth and flame, they shaped the world. Working together, albeit arguing, weaving seamlessly to and fro they accomplished many things. Percy, Thalia, Nico and Annabeth were the greatest of the elements - all harsh, unyielding, the best people to have guarding your back. But most of all, they were friends. Polar opposites, perhaps, but the glue that bound them together was tighter and stronger than any of them could ever begin to fathom.

And that's what made them heroes.

Author's Note: I'm not very happy with this, but I just couldn't concentrate and expand it, so...here it is. Adequate, at best, but I tried.
