Disclaimer: If I owned Young Wizards like Diane Duane does, I would be working on Wizards at War, not this fanfiction.

Torn

Mrs. Lesser smiled fondly at the young girl trooping up the stairs from the children's library. She had hidden the girl down there while she, Mrs. Lesser, had gotten rid of the bullies ready to beat her up. Juanita Callahan held a special place in the librarian's heart, probably because her abiding love for books. Nita had soft brown hair with grey eyes and a few freckles splotched across her nose. She wore blue jeans, faded from wear, and a creamy white shirt covered by a thin, sky-blue down vest. In one hand, she carried a little, library-bound book in shiny red buckram. The edges of the pages were slightly yellow, giving off the air of oldness.

Mrs. Lesser's eyes widened. She had never thought... but it was too obvious. Nita had all the attributes of a wizard. That book she carried... was a manual. 'Oh Powers, I might send her to her doom if I give it to her,' she thought. But one small voice interfered, 'Or by doing so, she might save the world.'

Mrs. Lesser sighed in disbelief and resignation. She could not deny Nita the book; she might get suspicious. So she made her decision. "Okay, bring it back on Monday, and I'll stamp it then."

"Thanks, Mrs. Lesser."

"I hope it'll be a good read."

"It probably will."

"Very likely, although how you missed this book, I have not clue. Oh, and Nita?"

"Yes?"

"Keep it. I have the feeling you'll need it more than others."

Nita looked slightly perplexed at this but smiled anyways.

"Bye!"

"Goodbye Nita."

As the girl exited the library, Mrs. Lesser sank back on a nearby armchair. If Nita had been looking, she would have seen the clear teardrop fall down the librarian's face. "Good luck."
