Just a little something I wrote a while ago. It's set after the hundreth episode.
I do not own Bones.
Wishing I Could
"Brennan come on!" Angela yelled after the scientist as she walked towards the forensics platform.
"Angela we are not discussing this." Brennan declares.
"Brennan," Angela begins " the man kissed you." We have to talk about this."
"Not now."
"Later then. You are not getting off the hook that easily." Angela says before walking away.
"Finally." Brennan thinks to herself. "I never thought she'd leave me alone."
A couple hours later and the two best friends are at the Royal Diner, having a conversation that should've taken place sooner.
"Brennan" Angela places her hands over her friend's. "I know this sort of thing makes you uncomfortable…."
"Angela I'm perfectly fine with relationships. I just don't believe in this whole façade."
"What façade?" Angela asks?
"Love" Brennan replies flatly. "I know you do. And Hodgins, Booth, Cam, and Sweets. You all believe that love will last, and that two people can be together forever. I don't. We are not a monogamous species. We were meant to keep the species alive, that's it."
"But what does this have to do with Booth?"
"Booth and I have been partners for five years.. Our relationship is completely professional." Brennan starts to lose her calm. "Why did he have to do this? He can't just change the game."
"Brennan. I'm going to tell you something and you're going to listen. Okay? No interrupting. You may not believe in soulmates or whatever, but Booth does and – " Brennan interrupts Angela.
"Angela, that's what I said –"
"Brennan." Angela says in an irritated tone.
"I apologize." Brenna says without a hint of remorse. Angela accepts it anyway.
"Why can't you just believe that a man loves you?" That was the million dollar question. Why couldn't Brennan just believe in love? Things would be easier if she could just gulp down her pride and accept it. As she's mulling it over, Booth's face pops into her head. Booth. It would be so easy to fall in love with Booth, marry him, have kids, but she's far too rational for that. So she rebels with reason.
"Most relationships end Angela. Look at you and Hodgins."
"But what if it doesn't? Have a little faith." Faith, as ridiculous as love in her opinion.
"Faith is an irrational belief." Angela had heard that argument thousands of times before. She came prepared.
"You have faith in Booth." Brennan wasn't expecting that.
"That's different." But even as the words came out of her mouth, she knew they weren't true.
"You are a very impossible friend." Angela says with a chuckle.
A few moments go by, but neither speaks.
"Sometimes I wish I could believe Ange." Angela looks up to Brenan's face. "Sometimes I wish I could."
