Walls

By Netbug009

The streets were illuminated by the glow of the Fenton Thermos absorbing yet another foe into its self. The halfa finally relaxed, transforming back into his human side and landing his feet on the soaked concrete that was the empty sidewalk. Despite it being near freezing, he didn't shiver. His ice powers had made him extremely resistant to the cold.

His opponent had been the fast type who could drive a hero crazy after hours of just trying to hit it with one measly ghost ray. The chase had began almost immediately after school, but now the streetlights of the forlorn road flickered. This was a horrible part of town, it was late, and it was cold.

These things made Maddie want to run up to her son, give him her coat, and walk home with him.

Of course, she couldn't. You don't just walk up to somebody when you were just spying on them. Danny was a smart boy. "I was just passing through" wasn't gonna work late at night, especially when you were so far into the outskirts of Amity Park. She had no reason to be out there except following him. Even if she decided to admit she had been keeping an eye on him, that would mean admitting she knew his secret, and that was going to bring a whole lot of things up that she wasn't ready to talk about yet.

It had been just another battle for Danny, but for Maddie the fight she has witnessed about a month ago now had changed her lifestyle. She had the ghost boy right where she wanted him. He hadn't even seen her coming. But that's was the problem. He hadn't seen her there. He hadn't seen anybody there, so he figured the coast was clear and transformed back into the familiar child that was her son. So, she had started following him; keeping an eye on his battles while many questions ran through her mind.

How long has this been happening?

Why didn't he tell her?

Why would he still not tell her?

Every time the questions having to do with her came up, a part of her heart tore. The fact that she was losing understanding of her child was becoming more and more hard to deny. There were thick walls standing tall between them, and Danny had been fixing them up every time they started to crumble.

...Or was she the one doing that?

That wasn't even a real question. She was at least helping build the walls. She had said so many threats to him. She had attacked him. She had wanted her own son to be reduced to a resource for a science experiment. But, she didn't know! She was a victim of coincidence! She was innocent, right?

No, she wasn't, because long before she had known this was her son, a part of her knew that this wasn't a soulless being. A smaller part of her had even understood that this creature was a hero. Wanting to kill a hero made her a villain, and she turned out to be a villain to her own son.

Now the desire to walk home with Danny had turned into a desire to hug him and cry and say how sorry she was for everything. It was a natural instinct of a mother to want to be there for her child, but now she couldn't.

She watched her son walk out of sight towards home. She took another path back to Fenton Works, several blocks over from her son.

But a few blocks were nothing compared to the distance between them.
