SECOND CHANCE
Leon could admit that he and D had gotten off to a very rocky start. He could even admit that it had been entirely his fault. Accusing someone of murder and hounding them for weeks on end wasn't the best way to make friends and influence people. Fortunately, D didn't seem the kind of person to hold grudges, or so he had thought at the time, but he would eventually find out otherwise.
The fact of the matter was that D held a huge grudge against the entire Human race, which Leon thought was ridiculous. After all, the massacre of his people, while horrible enough, had happened one thousand years ago. D himself hadn't been alive at the time and neither were the billions of other people that now existed on the planet. His holding a grudge and vowing vengeance seemed, well, kind of dumb.
Curiously, though he claimed to hate the whole of Humankind, D had never been anything but civil to him. Sure, they had had their moments, tempers had flared, insults had been thrown, but the worse offences had always fallen to Leon, mainly due to his ignorance on so many matters he considered beneath his concern… like snooty table manners and all things weird and arcane.
But now, with D gone, Leon found himself missing the other man, the countless invitations to tea, and just plain enjoying his company. The times he had spend with D, sipping tea and nibbling on the occasional sweet while discussing his cases and life in general had been the closest thing Leon had to sharing with a friend in a long time. And he missed that more than he could put into words.
Now, with duffle bag in hand and Chris' crayon picture in a protective frame, he was ready to set out on a mission to regain the one person in his life he thought he would never miss. And he would do anything, anything, for a second chance.
THE END
