Disclaimer: If I owned Kingdom Hearts, Numina-Namine's fic You Don't Miss It Till It's Gone would be KH3.

Author's Notes: AU and T for a reason that if I told you I would spoil it.

A sharp, stabbing pain...vision blurring...falling...darkness.

Who was he? It didn't know. What was his name? Where did he come from? Vague, unfocused memories of the ocean, the sky, and beryl eyes swam through his consciousness, disappearing before he could focus on them. He? Who was he? The Heartless didn't know anymore. The world came back into focus; a last fiber of his old being cried out. He knew this place... but his Heartless instincts took over and he focused on the hearts he - it sensed.

The shadow made its way along the vacant hallways, following the pungent scent of blood,
fear, and hearts. It could feel them beating; the rhythmic, thumping sound accentuated its desire for the hearts.

It came upon a small party huddled together. A flash of auburn - he (he?) knew that color - but his Heartless instincts overwhelmed the small part of him - it - that was fighting. It didn't know any girl with auburn colored hair.

It paused in front of the girl, fighting with itself. A small, insistent part of it was fighting the urge to rip out her heart then and there, although it didn't know why. The heart was so enticing, pure and clean and beautiful. Something, some small internal light,
told this Heartless not to hurt her. It cried that it couldn't hurt her.

And when the girl bent down, saying, "Sora?" softly, the Shadow was caught in indecisiveness.
That part of it was fighting even more determinedly, but when the girl put her arms around him -what that small part now knew was Sora -, the thirst for hearts overwhelmed him and Sora gave in to his Heartless instincts.

Donald and Goofy watched in horror as Kairi collapsed, auburn hair spread out on the floor, lovely eyes closed forever and a sphere of light leaving her. She faded away into light, leaving Donald, Goofy, and the Heartless who no longer was and never would again be Sora.
