I don't own it. And stuff.

There had been fireworks at the Wammy house once. They had mesmerized all of the younger children, as they became bursts of color in the sky before fizzling into nothing.
Then again, there were the cynical and jaded older children who weren't so easily impressed.
Matt had seemed interested in watching them, and Mello simply let himself be dragged along, despite the fact that he could have cared less about the whole thing.
"One firework is the same as all of the others," he muttered, rolling his eyes. "And you can practically see the air pollution."
This comment was met with a sharp blow to the side from Matt.
"Could you be any less fun?" he asked.
Mello hit him rather hard in the back of the head.
"Does that answer your question?"
Matt jumped onto a nearby rock. "Let's watch them from there," he said, looking mildly excited.
His blonde friend forced himself to do the same. The sky darkened more, and Matt leaned back. There was a loud bang, and a red streak shot vertically into the sky before exploding into a cacophony of colors.
Mello felt someone push him to the side. He looked over to find that it was Near.
"Hey! Go away, I don't want you here!"
Near continued to amble onto the rock where Matt and Mello were sitting.
"There's nowhere else," he said simply, his expression oddly indifferent. "You'll have to deal with it."
"Shut up, both of you," said Matt.
"Oh, right, like our voices are going to drown out the sound of a fricking firework. I'm practically going deaf as it is." Snapped Mello in annoyance.
Another firework shot up into the air with loud bang.
Shivers went up Matt's spine.
"What the hell was that?" he murmured to himself.
Mello looked over. "What?" he yelled over. "I can't hear you at all."
The redhead glanced over as well. "I don't know," he shouted. " It was nothing."
Two more fireworks went up.
This time he felt...fear.
"You know what," he called over to Mello. "You were right, this is a stupid idea. Let's go."
"Hey, you dragged me out here. I might as well watch the damn things!"
"I said we should go!" he protested.
Three more fireworks were sent off. The illumination allowed Mello to see Matt's face for a split second. What he saw surprised him.
"Are you...are you afraid of those?"
Matt shrugged. He was trying to ignore the fact that his rationality was all over the place and he didn't understand why. "I don't know! There's something I don't like about them! They sound like..."
Four more.
"Like what?"
"They sound like gunshot!"
Near was watching them in interest now, the fireworks all but forgotten.
Mello ignored the sudden spark of disconcertion that went through him as well. "I have a gun. Why would gunshot bother you?"
Another three.
Mello didn't even hear Matt's response. When he thought of gunshot, he mind conjured up images of someone being shot and covered in blood, though he could not see who. All he knew was that it bothered him just as it had Matt.
He began walking to the entrance to Wammy house. "These things are so retarded. I'd rather go eat chocolate."
A minute later, they were inside.
Matt pulled out his DS. "I'm sorry. I don't know what came over me."
"Whatever."
Near suddenly entered the building.
"They're over already?" asked Matt, hiding his relief.
"No. I just didn't like them," stated Near. "That's all."
Matt sighed internally. 'I was the only one bothered by them. Since when am I the one to be easily disturbed?'

Roger had noticed that the three most brilliant of the orphans were acting strangely.
Matt wasn't as interested in wasting his time with handheld games.
Mello, who had planned to eat chocolate before bed, didn't feel like eating it.
And oddest of all, he hadn't seen Near use any puzzles or toys that night.
They made him wonder.
