In the last battle, Reyna fought against a pack of empousai. So caught up in the battle, the Roman Praetor didn't sense the spear coming until it protruded from her sternum. She collapsed as the last empousa turned to dust, but everyone was too caught up in the battle to notice her fall.

It was not until after Gaea and her minions were defeated that a centurion noticed the daughter of Bellona's lifeless form. Her shroud was burned along with all the other fallen heroes, and New Rome had a day of mourning for their leader. But when the fire of the war died down, no one really missed her. Sure, every once in a while a stray thought would lead to the great Reyna Avila Ramirez-Arellano and bring a sad smile, but no one loved her enough to visit her grave.

In the Underworld, Reyna knew nobody was there waiting on her, nor did she have anyone to wait on, so she went for rebirth.

Maybe this was why the Moon goddess blessed her. Maybe it was that Reyna was Artemis' biggest what-if. Could she have found a place in the hunt-a family who loved her, not in a romantic way as she sought, but sisters to let her know they cared? Artemis would never know.

So when Reyna was reborn in District 12 as the firstborn in the Everdeen household, it was not out of pity that the goddess' blessing carried over. When the child grew into a fiery-eyed, spirited young woman, for once in her immortal lifetime, the goddess of the Hunt wanted the strong maiden to find love.
