ACROSS THE GREAT DIVIDE

The Sound of Drums/Last of the Time Lords

"What, is he your secret brother or something?"

Both men stared at her, identical expressions of incredulity on their faces. Martha shrugged, feeling almost self-conscious for the first time.

"You've been watching too much television," the Doctor grinned at her, before popping another chip in his mouth. Suddenly he leaned forward, dropping the packet on the cluttered table before him. "Yeah, he is, actually."

"Not really." Jack sat up, and Martha felt her eyes widen. "He's your brother?"

The Doctor fiddled with the edge of the paper wrapping around the chips. "A mistake in the Loom. We were conceived too close together, born two years apart. Same year at the Academy."

Martha furrowed her eyebrows in confusion. "But if you were two years apart in age, why were you in the same year at the Academy? Shouldn't one of you have been two years behind the other?"

"He's younger. Because of the extended lifespan of Gallifreyans, let alone Time Lords, we don't reach social maturity until we're fifty or so. Thus, the Academy is structured so that students in each year level are born within a range of around five years. The oldest student in our year was five years older than the youngest."

Before Martha could object that wouldn't the older ones stay at the Academy longer then? the Doctor launched himself to his feet. "Anyway! Details, details, not really one for details, am I? Now, where were we? Ways to get to the Master…"

A very short prologue, however I will set to work with the rest and have it here as soon as I can.

I came up with this little plot bunny while watching the Sound of Drums/Last of the Time Lords two-parter, and it wouldn't leave me. Therefore, I give you - Across the Great Divide! Updates will be as often as I can make them.
