A little tag of sorts to 9x23. Spoilers for 9x23, obviously. Just a little something that popped into my head this morning.
"Um, Sammy? A little help here?"
Sam spun around, hearing his brother's request for help and reacting quickly since he had no idea what Dean had found. 'A little help' could mean so many different things, ranging from a minor 'dude, this door is stuck' to something more serious like 'hey, there's someone here'. When Sam reached his brother, though, he found himself staring at his older sibling with a mixture of amusement and exasperation.
Dean stood in the middle of a devil's trap, his arms crossed and his expression far from amused, "Don't say a word."
"Would I ever?" Sam responded, his lips twitching with a hint of a smile.
Dean's gaze narrowed, and he replied dryly, "I know I would."
Sam knew Dean was right, if Sam had found himself in Dean's predicament under the same circumstances, Dean wouldn't hold back a quip...or ten. It had taken several weeks for Sam to come to terms with the fact that his brother was now a demon, and several more to be in a position where he was able to joke about Dean's condition, but any retort he could make would only feel awkward rolling off his tongue. This was their first job together since Dean had changed, and already it wasn't going as planned.
Sam must have been off in his thoughts too long, because Dean was quickly starting to go from annoyed to enraged, and the low growl his brother gave was enough to send Sam hurrying to scratch through the paint to free his brother. While Deanmon (as Sam thought of his brother in his own mind, never aloud) still maintained some qualities of the protective older brother that Sam had been raised by, this version of Dean had a far shorter temper and was much more explosive than the old Dean...which really said a lot, since Dean wasn't known for his patience before this ordeal. Sam wasn't really surprised, though, since part of being a demon meant releasing the qualities that kept you human. Whatever changes may have happened to his brother, Sam didn't care as long as it meant he still had his brother.
Not to say he wasn't looking for a cure. Preferably one that wouldn't kill Sam in the process. While Sam had been ready to die for the cause while doing the trials, he wasn't still willing to do so unless he knew for certain that it would save Dean's life.
And this is why they were currently creeping through an abandoned house in middle of a forest. The owner had been a hunter, and rumor had it that he kept a library that could have rivaled Bobby Singer's in a hidden room somewhere at this location. Sam was certain that any book that Ambrose Lineck could possibly own would also be in the Men of Letters' library, but that wasn't going to stop him from making sure, since he had made very little progress going through the books in their own library to find a secondary solution. Dean had been very little help, not really caring much to try and change things, but at least had hadn't been standing in Sam's way. Not that Sam would have let Dean stand in his way-one way or another, his brother was going to be saved. And if he had to cut through a few demon traps along the way, so be it.
