Chapter 1

Firekit woke up, feeling shaky. Something was wrong. She blinked her eyes slowly. She could feel it. She poked Spottedkit with her paw.

"Wha-a?" Spottedkit said groggily.

"It feels like something's... Wrong."

"Whatever..." Spottedkit closed her eyes, and turned her head, resting it on Squirrelflight's belly. "I love sleeeeeeeep." She murmured.

Suddenly Firekit remembered. Yesterday Spottedkit had to have a poppy seed, because of landing on a patch of nettles. Remembering this shot a new spark of guilt through Firekit. If she had'nt dared Spottedkit to poke Squirrelflight's head, then they wouldn't had have to go outside. Outside they coincidentally met Seedpaw, who talked about a monster living behind the nettle patch, and up the tall oak tree. Spottedkit got so scared that Lilypaw dared her to go and scare the monster. Wanting to show she was strong, Spottedkit tried to reach the tree by jumping over the nettles. She jumped, but her fluffy, spotted fur got whisked by a low hanging branch, and she landed awkwardly in the middle of the nettle patch. Firekit shook her head furiously. It was ALL her fault!

Firekit shook her head. It felt weird. There was something outside. She couldn't sit still. "Squirrelflight!" She wailed.

Squirrelflight lifted her head, and her eyes were illuminated in the midnight moonlight. "Yes, sweety?" She said dreamily.

"WAKE UP!"

She jumped up. "What?"

"I feel weird. I think something is wrong..."

Then the answer came from outside. "FIRE!" Dovewing screamed.

Warriors shot out of dens and started scrabbling around the camp. Footsteps sounded outside the nursery. Bramblestar shot in, and said, "Get them out!"

Firekit knew Bramblestar was referring to her and Spottedkit. She felt rigid with panic. She shot a glance to her sister, and her heart sank when she saw her peacefully sleeping body. Squirrelflight picked Spottedkit up in the scruff, and Bramblestar picked up Firekit. Blinded by terror, with sparks flying through her head, she barely noticed when the nursery walls lit ablaze. Heat seared her fur, and she shreiked in fear. She closed her eyes and went limp. She felt her bump up and down as Bramblestar carried her away from camp. She silently prayered to StarClan, her mind spinning wildly. Pl-ea-as-e do-n't t-take my sis-te-r!

Spottedkit opened her eyes. The den was dark. She had such a bad dream... There had been a fire! Everyone had to leave camp! Spottedkit got up and looked around. She froze. This wasn't the nursery... There were warriors everywhere! She was inclosed by large walls of smooth red rock. (Note: The abandoned twolegplace is made of brick. It cannot burn.) Firekit looked up at Spottedkit. Her eyes were dull and wide as an owls.

"What happened?"

Firekit just stared. For what seemed like a season, she just stared. Then she answered. "There. Was. Fire." And then she just stared some more.

There was a fire FOR REAL? It was just a dream! Spottedkit thought silently. Stupid poppy seeds...

Firekit was still staring. She looked like a dead rabbit. She's shaken, Spottedkit thought sadly. She reached over to groom at Firekit's head. Her ruffled fiery fur was oddly lacking its normal sheen. Oh dear... Spottedkit thought, as her tounge rasped over her fur.
