Another V/Q one-shot! :) I just can't get enough of them.

Such a Grey Day

It was a grey day. Almost excessively grey. Everything seemed to have lost it's natural colour and conformed with that of the clouds; the sand was grey, the sea was grey, the pebbles and stones were grey, the distant shape of the City was grey, even the grass at the top of the beach looked dull and lifeless, hardly green at all.

Violet Baudelaire sat on a rock, half facing the sea, half facing the city. Her dress, black of colour, but quite fancy in its own way, with lace, silk and netting adorning almost every inch of it, was caught and blown in the breeze. She twisted her head, and her long hair fluttered past her face, obscuring her vision for a few moments. With a sigh, Violet reached into her pocket and pulled out a long ribbon with which she tied her hair back.

Suddenly aware of someone else's presence on the beach, Violet looked around. As soon as she did so, her heart skipped a beat, and a smile graced her lips, making her already beautiful face shine with joy. Leaping to her feet, Violet gathered her skirts up and ran across the sand towards a young gentleman who stood, grinning towards her. When she had reached him she stopped abruptly, and for a second the pair of them stood, neither of them knowing quite what to do. And then, simultaneously, they threw their arms around one another, and as the familiar tingling sensation flooded Violet's senses, Quigley Quagmire's laugh filled the air.

They hung on tight, swaying slightly on the ground as tears squeezed from Violet's eyes. Finally, they broke apart, and Violet looked deep into Quigley's eyes, taking in every inch of his face as if she might never see it again.

'You came,' she whispered, and numbly, she felt Quigley's thumb brush away her tears, a smile still etched upon his face.

'Yes,' he said, 'I came. I came for you.'

Without saying a word, the two orphans began to walk in the same direction, towards the City where they had lived as younger children.

'Are...are Isadora and Duncan with you?' asked Violet, fearing the worst. She was greeted with a pleasant surprise, therefore, when Quigley beamed at her, his eyes alight with happiness.

'Yes, they're with me. We've been living in the city for a while now. We've only just been able to find you.'

'That's wonderful!' cried Violet, thoroughly overjoyed that her friends were safe.

'What about Klaus and Sunny?' asked Quigley, a small frown creasing his forehead. Violet sighed, all happiness vanishing from her face.

'I don't know where they are,' she said, 'they went missing a while ago, after we left The Great Unknown again. I've been searching for them.'

Quigley stopped, looking at Violet, who paused beside him, staring into his handsome face.

'We'll find them,' he promised, 'you've got me to help you now. And Duncan and Isadora too.'

'You think so?' asked Violet, hope gleaming in her eyes.

'I know so,' replied Quigley, and bent his head to hers.

Their kiss was soft and sweet, an innocent, perfect kiss that expressed all their love, desire and passion without any of the vulgar aggression they both so despised. Once it had ended, Violet smiled at Quigley, before softly saying, 'I've waited a long time to do that.'

'So have I,' answered Quigley, 'so let's do it again.'

And as Quigley placed his hands on Violet's waist, Violet wrapped her arms around his neck, and their lips met once more as they forgot about all their troubles and all their worries, and focused solely on each other. In just a moment it would end, but for now, all Violet and Quigley thought of was how much they each loved the other.
