The wind howled in the trees and the leaves rustled unnoticed across the ground. The sky was growing darker as 6 young boys were walking across Tulsa, 4 of which were in a Halloween costume. Dallas had decided not to dress up on counts that it might ruin his reputation, but under the harassment of Two-Bit and Ponyboy he had put a cowboy hat on. Darrel had not dressed up; he wasn't in it for the trick-or-treating, he was in it to keep his brothers out of trouble. Ponyboy had a bed sheet on his back and some sort of a mask… It was unlikely anyone could tell by looking at him, but he was dressed as batman. Soda was wearing red and had pained black horns on him and was running around with a fork—his own idea of a creative costume. Steve was wearing cover-all's and a plastic construction hat, clearly dressed as a workman. Two-Bit was dressed as a drunken bum, but no one was sure if he had dressed up or just came as he dose everyday.
The boys were on their way to pick up the other boy that would be joining them that night; Jonathon Cade. He wanted to be picked up at his house so that his costume would be a surprise; it had been a long time since anyone had seen Johnny so excited over a holiday that, you know, isn't really a holiday. They were approaching his house when they heard a rustling noise near the end of his lane, which was surprising seeing as Two-Bit and Soda were running around screaming. When they heard it though, they stopped.
Darry stopped and the entire gang ran into his back, since it was dark so they couldn't see that he had stopped.
"Guys," he whispered, holding up his hand.
"What is that, Darry?" Ponyboy asked in a nervous voice.
"I don't know…"
"Maybe it's a trick-or-treater?" Ponyboy asked.
"No… It's-," Darry started.
"Maybe it's attacking Johnny!" Two-Bit said in a dramatic tone.
In unison, the gang drew in a long breath, and during the silence a bang could be heard from whatever was at the end of Johnny's lane.
"What do we do?" 9 year old Ponyboy asked.
"I dunno…" Darry whispered back.
"I don't care, I've got a HARD HAT!" Steve shouted. Apparently he'd somehow got into candy early…
"Maybe we should attack it," Two-Bit whispered. "I can throw this beer can at it…"
"No!"
Footsteps, and another bang issued from the end of Johnny's lane, the wind blowing louder than ever.
"Maybe it's an old bum," said Two-Bit. "I can throw this beer can at him…"
"Guys, don't be stupid. We need to surround it," whispered Darry, proving that logic wasn't always his strong point. "Then it can't get away."
"Alright…" Everyone agreed.
"Alright, you two-" Darry said, pointing at Soda and Steve, "Go around that way." He pointed off to the right. "Ponyboy, me and you will go behind it.. Dally, you go left, and Two-Bit, you go right… When I signal, we all run at it." Darry said, waving his hand to demonstrate the signal.
Soon, everyone was in their positions, and more footsteps could be heard.
"Ready Pony?" Darry asked, and Ponynodded. Darry waved his hand, and they all charged.
"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!" they all screamed as they ran, and collided with what was making strange noises.
"AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!" screamed the thing that they collided, with, then it started crying softly. "Guys!" it said, and everyone in the gang looked at each other.
"Johnny?" asked Darry.
"What… did you… do that for?" Johnny sobbed, lying flat on his back.
"We thought you were being attacked!"
"I was… just taking out the trash."
