Hey everyone! It's been a long time since I've uploaded anything here, but now that the holidays are here, I've suddenly been hit with a wave of… what would you call this? I dunno, but I basically feel like I want to write again. So hey, here's the first chapter of the rewrite of "An Otherworldly Portal" – now titled "The True Threat". Don't forget to leave a review for any feedback or any comments you guys have.
One thing to clarify before we begin: this story does not follow the exact canon of the FNaF universe.
With that out of the way, I hope you guys enjoy, and without further ado, let's begin.
"Hey look! Come over here!"
"Ooh, ooh! They look so cool!"
"They look so… shiny!"
"Be careful! Remember what they said?"
"Yeah, I know, but… Maybe we can get a liiiiitle bit closer?"
"Hmm…"
"C'mon, it'll be fun. Not like it'll bite you or anything."
"I guess…"
"Here, you can go first!"
"M-me? But-"
"Oh, are you scared? Hahaha, how silly is that? Come on, just go and take a few steps."
"…okay."
Chapter 1: A Birthday Gift
Saturday, 21st of March, 1992:
"Mail, mail! Get it while it's fresh!"
The voice was familiar, one that had become a regular part of the weekly routine of Kipp the Koopa and Mitchell the Yoshi, two close friends who lived near Toad Town – the 'centre of the Mushroom Kingdom'.
Mitch dashed towards the door and swung it open, as per usual; and of course, there stood Tammy the MailToad, as bright and cheerful as ever. "Here's your mail," she recited, holding out a small parcel.
"Thanks!" Mitch began to take the package from Tammy, but as realisation struck him, he paused. "Wait a minute… this isn't newspaper…" he stared blankly at the pink toad for a moment. "It's not even Sunday… Why do we have mail?"
"Well, you're right in saying that it's not Sunday. So what day is it really?"
"Saturday… how is this relevant at all? Are you just delivering a day early or something?"
"Have a look at the package."
At that point, Mitch realised that he had not paid any attention to what he was holding aside from the fact that it was not a newspaper. The object in his hands was rectangular, about the size of a shoe box. It had been carefully wrapped with parcel paper. In the top-right corner was a label; a small piece of paper that had been hastily sticky-taped to the package with some writing scribbled onto it.
"For Kipp – 21st of March, 1992. Hmm… twenty-first of – oh! I know what day it is!"
Tammy winked playfully at Mitch. "Mind if I come in? We can both surprise him with this!"
Mitch nodded and lowered his voice to a whisper. "Sure, but first, uh… what did you get-"
"MITCH!"
Kipp's abrupt call startled Mitch, who jumped and nearly dropped the package. "Uh! Yeah?"
"Who's at the door?" Kipp inquired, from a room nearby.
"It's just Tammy!" he responded, then lowered his voice to address Tammy. "Here, let's go have breakfast."
Mitch lead Tammy down the small front hallway, towards the kitchen. It was a simple house; the walls were a pale-yellow, the floor had a simple blue-green checker pattern and the house itself wasn't all too big. The doors on the side of the hallway lead to Kipp and Mitch's individual bedrooms, the bathroom, the toilets and the closet. At the end of the hall was the dining area and the kitchen, and off to the side was the living room. As they entered the kitchen, Kipp turned to face the two. His attention was immediately drawn to the package that Mitch held.
"What's that?"
Mitch prepared with an "ahem", nudged Tammy, and simultaneously they shouted, "Happy Birthday Kipp!"
At that moment Kipp realised that that day was his birthday. He grinned joyfully and thanked them. "You guys are the best. Here, I've got some more toast coming up. Go take a seat at the table!"
From there, the three proceeded to set the table and eat breakfast. Once they had finished, they washed up and headed to the living room.
"C'mon, let's just get to the exciting part," Mitch said, handing the package to Kipp.
The first thing that Kipp noticed was how light the package was. He was about to begin tearing the parcel paper off, but suddenly paused. "Wait, who is this from? Is it from you, Mitch?"
Mitch shook his head. "Tammy here did."
"Oh, Tammy! This is very nice of-"
Tammy quickly cut him off. "Actually, the gift isn't from me. I… well, I actually don't know where it comes from. It arrived in the post office the other day with no indication of where it actually came from."
"That's… a little strange. But I guess it doesn't matter all too much…" Kipp shrugged, and began to tear the parcel paper off, revealing a simple cardboard box. He slowly pried it open. "A box? What could be insiiiii…" Kipp looked up at the others, puzzled.
"W-what's inside?"
Kipp shook his head. "It's um..." He reached his hand in to grab the object and slowly withdrew it, revealing a small brown plush toy. It was a cute little bear that had beady eyes and held a microphone in his right hand.
Suddenly, Tammy's phone began to ring. "Oh, that's probably the office. I'd better head back now, there's more mail to hand around today, so I can't be hanging around for too long. I'll meet up with you guys tomorrow, okay?"
The pair nodded and waved as Tammy rushed out of the house.
"I do wonder who sent this, though. It's very strange. Oh, hold on! There's a little piece of paper in the box! Let's see what it says." Most of the writing had been scribbled over. "This is weird… 'From: iam on'? What in the world does that mean? And why are the words so spaced out?"
"It's probably a real name. We just don't know what that name is."
"I guess so… it's just weird that they scribbled out most of it."
"They're probably just being silly. You wouldn't expect someone to write something like that, right? 'From I am on'. That's absurd… actually, it sounds kinda funny."
"Yeah, no."
"Alright, well, it doesn't look like we're getting anywhere with that, so just enjoy the present! It's pretty cute, isn't it?
Kipp grinned. "Sure is… but it kinda reminds me of… you know what, I don't know. Whatever. We should go do some stuff."
Mitch nodded. "Mhm! I've planned out a bunch of stuff we should do today."
The rest of the day was spent enjoying Kipp's birthday; the two visited others, played games, bought some sweets (including ice-creams and cake), and basically just hung out together. The only problem was that the mystery of who had sent the present lingered at the back of Kipp's mind for the whole day.
That night, Kipp and Mitch arrived home late; it was nearly midnight by the time they reached the front door of their house. However, something seemed off. The house wasn't silent. As the duo approached the house, they heard a quiet, low laugh. It was unsettling; even almost demonic.
"Huh? That's weird… I haven't heard anything like that before. What in the world is in our house? Wait, why is something even in our house?! It's locked!" Kipp's heart began to race as he approached the door. Mitch was close behind, shivering. It wasn't because it was cold, either. Because it wasn't.
"I don't like that sound. It's… scary."
"It'll be okay, it'll be fine," Kipp said. But he had a gut feeling; a feeling that told him that it wouldn't be fine. He placed the key in the lock of his door, hesitating before turning it. "Ready?"
"As ready as I'll ever be…"
Kipp slowly turned the key, unlocking the door to whatever could be waiting inside. His hand moved to the door knob; he was sweating. "It's probably just… the television, or something. We must have left it on. Yeah, that's it." That's what he tried to tell himself, as he opened the door. But what met his eyes as he opened the door was something he would not have been prepared for; it was a large, robotic bear, standing in the hallway, facing away from them. It looked nearly exactly the same as the one that Kipp had received in plush form; it even had a real microphone in its right hand.
"U-um, h-hello? Who… what…" before Kipp could finish, the bear swiftly turned on the spot and emitted an ear-piercing screech.
Hit with a wave a shock, both Kipp and Mitch fell to the floor; and as they hit the floor, they blacked out.
With that, this concludes the first chapter of The True Threat! Don't forget to leave a review with any feedback you have – I'm not the best at writing introductions, so please forgive me for that. But hey, if you made it to the end of the chapter then I assume that you're enjoying the story, right? Well, I sure hope so. Anyway, things will start picking up in the next chapter of the story, which will be out soon – expect it to be out in a couple of days, maybe even tomorrow if I get it done. Hope to see you then!
