Never Be
You don't know how long I have wanted
to touch your lips and hold you tight, oh
You don't know how long I have waited
and I was going to tell you tonight
The karaoke machine makes her eardrum tremble with its loud noise. She turns to face him, letting go of his hand. When she sees the pure look of adoration on his face, she remembers the tall, smallish built freshman, who had applauded longer and louder than anyone else. She sees glimmers of a young, innocent boy whose eyes had followed her when she walked through the doors after the incident that had changed her life. The same boy who had held her hand in silence when she'd curled up behind the gymnasium on a cold winter's night and offered her his jacket and mittens.
She looks into those eyes now. They're older and slightly less vibrant, but still kind and hopeful. It's easy to imagine herself with him. In the color of his eyes, she sees the color of the house they'd choose to raise their children in. She pictures his childish smile on a perfect baby girl, lying in his arms. She feels his arm wrap around her waist, imagining it being their wedding day. She sees herself in a creamy white dress and him in a black tuxedo, saying loving, hopeful vows. It's perfect.
And then she sees his wedding ring shine in the reflection of the stage lights, and she knows… They can never be.
But the secret is still my own
and my love for you is still unknown
