Disclaimer: I only own my own imagination (until the aliens invade!)….
Maxxie and Anwar were best friends when they were younger. The label seemed to mean something; something more than disappointed glances, empty promises, and accusing looks.
Maxxie's gay, Anwar is religious. Anwar hides behind his religion as an excuse to condone gays. Since his father has confessed that he'll still accept Maxxie, Anwar has pretended to be okay with it. But Maxxie still catches the odd looks, the uncomfortable pauses and the distance growing between them. Because, for all the forced smiles and stupid jokes, Maxxie knows that Anwar isn't okay with it, and not just because of his religion.
Of course Anwar is still known as his best-friend, but Maxxie has to begin to wonder how true the name is. Because he knows that Anwar would no longer be the first person he runs to with news, he wouldn't be the one that Maxxie would trust completely, and he's no longer the one that Maxxie always feels comfortable around. The title is souly that, a title, it no longer holds any weight. It's just the term that has been used to tie the two boys together for so many years that they've become tangled in it. It's a constant reminder, trailing from their names, that reminds them both of how things once were.
People drift apart; it's the natural course of things. But best-friends aren't supposed to ever renounce their title. Everyone constantly expects your 'best-friend' to be the first person you run to, the person you spend the most time with; it's not like that anymore. Your best-friend is no longer the one that you gladly call on, rather a last resort, but you smile and pretend that everything's fine, because it's what is expected, of both of you.
I know it's short, but I'm still recovering from my cold and am drowsy. This piece is especially realistic for me because I've been thinking lately and have come to the conclusion that my 'best-friend' may no longer be that. So basically, I thought that Maxxie and Anwar may be going through a very similar thing, with their friendship lagging behind the title it possesses. Anyway, please review and let me know what you think!
