I Lament
I have seen death before--I, who am an elf, and have lived the passage of uncounted seasons.
The trees, shedding their leaves, raise their brittle limbs for the ice and wind to crack; but springtime clothes the world anew in green. The moon goes dark, but shines again. The night is always followed by the day. But the orcs I slay rise not again (and do not think I give no thanks for that!) and this silent land we travel is littered with the ruins of a people dead and gone.
It is Aragorn who bids the son of Gondor take his rest. Aragorn, raised among the elves but mortal nonetheless, sends the vessel down the river for its long passage--to what? Men and dwarves (and hobbits too, said Bilbo's withered countenance) are mortal. Life's springtime comes but once for them, and darkness falls without a dawn.
I have seen death before. And still I do not understand.
