Gilbert had been away at med school for more than a year. He worked himself to the max trying to forget about Anne and Gardiner. "What was so special about Roy that he didn't have? Why has Anne chosen him? Blasted Gardiner," thought Gil. Such thoughts were and weren't a rarity for Gilbert Blythe. They were because he did spend most of his time thinking about Anne (isn't she such a wonderful thing for one to focus their mind on). They weren't because Gilbert rarely cursed anything or anyone, even Gardiner, for that was just a steady dislike. Gilbert didn't want anybody if he couldn't have Anne.
Gilbert could not get his mind off of Anne as he sat on the train on his way back to Avonlea. The same was the case on the fairy ride from the mainland as well. Instead of wallowing in self-pity, he decided that he had to see her, even if it was just for a closure. To make sure that he didn't have a chance, because if he did and he missed it, he would never forgive himself.
Upon arriving home, he found his parents were out and there was a note saying that if they were not back, they were delayed in Carmody and would be home tomorrow. Gil saw this as a perfect opportunity to see Anne, and if it failed then he could spend the rest of the trip with his parents trying to cheer him up. And with this in mind Gilbert Blythe set back out the door and down the lane to Green Gables.
The closer to Green Gables that he got, the more nervous he felt. It was getting to the point where his stomach was feeling unsettled. But Diana Bar- Wright interrupted those thoughts as she flew down towards the lane from her mother's house. "Oh Gil!" She exclaimed as she hugged him and before he had any chance to reply continued on, "You have to go to Green Gables at once. I know you are only in med school but the doctor is out of town and won't be back for a week and Anne-"
Diana didn't finish her sentence on account of two different things. First, she burst into tears and it is hard to talk when one is crying. Secondly, her audience was long gone. The second that Anne's name had left Diana's lips Gilbert Blythe was sprinting up the lane like a young schoolboy, just with a slight bit more urgency and an alarmed look on his face.
