What She Said and What She Forgot to Say

She said, angels would watch over me. Hell, that's freakin' awesome. Right? What she forgot to say was demons would take her from me. So gonna kill as many of those evil sonuvbitches as I can before they finally kill me too.

She said, I was a good big brother. Can't argue with her there? Can I? I'd never let anything happen to Sammy. What she forgot to say was someday I might have to kill him. Of course she wouldn't say that. A mother would never tell her son to kill his baby brother. . . . Hell no, that's a father's job.

She said, she'd always be proud of me. Or at least I think she did. It's really far too long ago to remember. What she forgot to say was she wouldn't be around to share in my life. Yeah, that so sucks. But I think she would be proud. I am a good soldier, fighting to save as many people as I can before I die. Dad taught me well.

She said, to look both ways before crossing the road. Yep, still do. Don't worry, Mom, I'll never get run down by a car. What she forgot to say was to leave a trail of salt in front of the doors and windows to keep out evil creatures at night. Yeah, got that one covered too. Nothin's gonna get to Sammy. I promise. Not while I'm still around to do anything about it.

She said, don't look a gift-horse in the mouth. God, I don't even know what that means. Where the hell do they come up with these dumb sayings any ways? What she forgot to say was to make sure all my guns were loaded before going into battle. I've got that one covered though, learned it the hard way when I was nine. It's one lesson I've never forgotten. . . . Thanks, Dad.

She said, I could be anything I wanted to be. Yeah, right. What she forgot to say was I would be damn good at hustling pool and credit card fraud. Hey, it's a living . . . a man's gotta eat, right?

She said, never forget you're a Winchester and that's something to be proud of. Yeah, unless you're wanted by the law in about thirty of the fifty states. Ah, good times! What she forgot to say was when salting and burning an evil spirit while in prison, make sure you get your facts straight first. Man, that Tiny sure had one helluva right cross. . . . Sorry I couldn't save you, dude.

She said, school was important. Sure it is, hot chicks in tight sweaters and low-rise jeans. Yep, definitely important. What she didn't say was Sam's girlfriend Jess would burn to death on a ceiling in college. Nope, don't think that one ranks up there with things a mother would tell their son. Well, not if they want them to go to college that is.

She said, I love you, Dean, every night without fail. I'll never forget that. What she forgot to say was goodbye. Yeah, that one's a tough one. I'll never forget that. It's definitely burned into my memory.

She said to stay. Oh, God, how I wanted to. But it wasn't real. It was just a stupid wish and wishes don't come true. She forgot to say goodbye for a second time. Don't worry about me, Mom, I've made the right decision. My happiness for all their lives — no contest.

I love you, Mom. . . .
