A/N: I'm very fond of the way the two funeral scenes (Hughes' & Mr Hawkeye's) mirror each other, and this little thing is sort of based on that.
Also, English is my second language, so feel free to point out my mistakes.
This is the third time you stand at a grave together.
The wind is freezing, and the cold leaves your cheeks and nose pink. Your hands are very pale.
A light touch lingers on your shoulder blade, there are murmured words that you don't quite hear. You hear the others leave, a moment later. They know how it is, and they have no words. That's alright. Your posture is stiff, and the wind is tugging your hair free insistently.
He is standing next to you, and you don't look at him.
"I'm being very silly," you say and you aren't really talking to him. "I am being immature and I know better, but…"
You bite your lip and try to shake off your foolishness the best you can. It doesn't work. "I regret it."
He doesn't say anything and you look at the horizon, the wispy clouds, and you wonder whether it's going to rain or snow.
"I know it would have made things too complicated, but I regret that we never became lovers."
It feels so silly when you say it. You doubt you would have made a very good lover, or a beloved, either. But.
"I suppose there'd be more left now. Perhaps not, but I cannot help thinking that maybe—"
It begins to snow, and you can't blame your tears on the sky. He's standing next to you and you don't look at him. As long as you don't, you don't have to admit that he isn't there. That he's beneath your feet instead, deep in the cold ground. That he isn't anywhere, now.
You go to your empty apartment and make yourself a cup of tea. Outside it has begun to snow, and all you have left is the lost chance for a love that never came to be.
