The people are the heroes now.
They had not known oppression in their lives. Yes, an observer from the outside, moderately intelligent and well-versed in the ways of the world, would have cried out in shock and pain to see the miseries heaped upon each other. But the masses had no such perspective; they had spent all their lives in the dark chasm they thought was home. Those at the bottom knew nothing of life at the top, and those at the summit knew it would not be long before they were displaced. Their destinies awaited with wretched inevitability, and for this miserable perversion of dignity they knew no other word than "contentment."
"Nothing will ever change," a million voices cried. "Nothing ever has," lamented a hundred million more. "Nothing ever should!" commanded a dozen. A still, small voice yet cried, "But Hope! The day is coming when your chains shall be broken, when unity shall prevail, and when the only law shall be: justice, equality, and respect! Throw off your shackles, and join the tide of your brothers! The day is coming; lo, it dawns!"
The voice was Reason. But the oppressors marched ever onward, bringing their heavy loads to bear on the already-burdened. Even the oppressors were oppressed, and the evil pyramid towered to the heavens, a Babel begging for obliteration.
Ah, but what chaos! What awful, glorious chaos, when the tower could reach no higher, when society collapsed under its own weight, when all the exploited, as one, declared: "The game is over!" When all vestige of the old life disappeared, and a new world came to be, a blank slate, waiting to be filled once again!
And now, the once-silent voice thundered in all corners:
"With central planning, all shall know their place!" And behold; every piece was guided to its pre-ordained station.
"From each according to his ability, to each according to his need!" And behold; all found a place, perfectly suited to theirs natures, and in need of precisely their skills.
"Harmony shall come, where once there was disorder!" And behold; shoulder to shoulder, all society fell into ordered ranks and rows.
"All shall be equal, and none shall know tyranny!" And behold; every protrusion was leveled, and every gap was filled.
And though all lived at the bottom, they had no masters over their heads, and they could feel the sun.
