There was the smallest gasps that sounded in the darkness. Emma squinted, her head pounding. She took in deep breaths as she tried to figure out how to untangle herself from the sheets and limbs that wrapped around her. She shouldn't be here, she knew. She shouldn't have even attended that party, and she did, and she was here now. Emma looked down at the short brown locks sharing the same pillow with her, and she slowly sat up, took Regina's arm from her waist, and took off the sheets and winced as her feet made a soft sound on the hardwood floor. Emma had to leave. She had to get out of there before they both regained their minds. Emma hurried to scoop up her underwear, which wer buried under another pair. Emma swallowed as she moved regina's delicate material aside and put hers on. Then, she grabbed her hirt and buttoned two of the middle buttons. She was about to reach down for her pants when a voice stopped her. it was a voice so much smaller than anything Emma thought Regina could produce, and she froze.
"You're leaving me aren't you?" Regina asked.
The words from the fire were not lost on Emma as she slowly turned around. The mayor's hair was tousled and sticking up in places Emma knew she woudln't see in the daylight. Regina's eyes were trained on her, and Emma took in a deep slow breath. She had to leave. She had to. She couldn't leave. She couldn't leave her. "No," Emma finally said, mentally kicking herself for sounding like a frog. "Just going to the bathroom. Be right back." Emma turned towards the door and flipped on the lightswitch, wincing at the sudden light. As she turned behind the door to close it, she saw the mayor's eyes closed, her head tilted down, almost as if she was mentally kicking herself as well. Emma felt her chest shift and tighten, and she closed the door with a soft click.
Now that she was in there, she had no choice but to do as she said she was going to do. She didn't need to go, but she sat on the toilet seat anyway as flickers of Regina's face came back to her, and more importantly her reaction to it. Regina wanted her to stay? Emma was so sure that if she hadn't left, the mayor would have kicked her out, but that voice... That voice. There it was again, that feeling in her chest. Emma sighed and stood a moment later, and then she went about the routine one would do after using the bathroom, letting the water run as she brought her fingers to her hair. Then she opened the door again and turned off the light.
Regina was laying down now, and Emma briefly thought about taking her pants and just getting the hell out of there now that the other woman was asleep, but her feet kept on towards the bed. She pulled back the sheets and got into the bed as gently as she could, even though Regina had one of those beds that you could jump on with the glass of wine and not spill the glass or something. Still, she was slow in getting comfortable in the bed, inching closer to Regina's back. Then, hesitantly, Emmabrought her hand up, let it pause in the air, and then brought it down gently on the other side of Reginas body. It was then that the brunette seemed to come to life, moving back into Emma's stomach. regina took Emma's hand from where it'd landed on the bed and brought it to her lips. "Thank you for not leaving."
"I won't," Emma responded in the dark. As Regina's breathing evened out, Emma hoped she could continue to promise this, and that thought only worsened that damn tightness in her chest.
End.
