Chapter One: Moving

"Malina, get up!" my mom called from the bottom of the stairs.

I rolled out of bed and trudged down the stairs. "Why so early?" I asked. "It's Saturday!" I sat down at the breakfast bar.

"We're leaving for Maine today, remember?" she asked as she set a plate of strawberry and chocolate chip waffles in front of me.

I shifted uncomfortably. "Yeah, I remember," I said sadly. I didn't like the idea of leaving my home in New York City to go to some small town in Maine.

"Honey, I know you don't want to leave, but you know your grandmother isn't getting any younger. She asked if we could move up there so she could be with us."

"What about my friends? I don't want to leave them behind!" I argued, even though I knew it wasn't going to work.

"You'll make new friends, Mali. Storybrooke is full of amazing people!"

"New friends are not the same as my current friends!"

"Oh, sweetie, I know." She kissed my forehead.

"I'm done," I said. I scooted my plate across the counter. I got up and went to my room to get dressed.

I sighed as I picked out my shirt, a white and navy striped V-neck. I grabbed a pair of white jeggings and a knitted navy blue cardigan. I quickly got dressed and then put on some music. I was thinking as I fixed my hair into a messy bun. Why did we have to move? Grandma would be fine until I finished high school this year! Storybrooke was a small town. It wasn't even on the map of Maine! How will we even get there? Mom had obviously been there before... I was trying to figure out how when the doorbell rang.

I ran down the stairs to answer the door. I reached for the doorknob when Wilson, our dog, about knocked me over. "Wilson!" I scolded. I opened the door and was surprised to see Lidia and Jessica, my two best friends waiting there. Lidia held an envelope, and Jessica held a box of chocolates. They were dressed in pink and red. I was seriously confused. "Come on in. What's this for? I'm moving, not getting married or anything!"

"Happy Valentine's Day!" they sang in unison.

"I totally forgot! I'm so sorry guys! I didn't get you anything, I've been so busy with moving and..."

They stopped me. "It's fine! We knew you were moving today, and we came to cheer you up, Mali!" Jessica replied. She handed me the chocolates, and Lidia gave me the envelope.

"Thank you," I replied. I hugged them both and then led them upstairs to my room.

"No problem, Mali! We're your best friends, it's what we do!" Lidia said.

I sat in my bay window, and Lidia sat on my bed while Jessica took the beanbag chair. "I'm going to miss you guys."

"We're gonna miss you, too," Jessica said.

"Yeah, Mali! She's right," Lidia replied.

"I can't believe you're going to Maine," Jessica said, "it's too far away!"

"I know," I replied, "promise to FaceTime me, okay?"

"Well we obviously will!" Lidia said.

They stayed for awhile and we talked about moving and how we wouldn't see each other anymore.

"Mali! Lidia and Jessica need to go home, we need to leave! The U-HAUL is here!" Mom called.

"Sorry guys," I said as I led them downstairs. We all hugged one last time.

"Bye," I said. The tears came down my cheeks. "You guys will always be my best friends, no matter what!"

"Mali, I miss you already!" Lidia said.

"Malina, don't you dare forget us," Jessica said.

"You know I won't!"

Then they were gone. I grabbed the chocolates and the envelope. I read the card enclosed. It said:

Happy Valentine's Day, Mali! We're going to miss you too much, so don't think we're not thinking about you!

-Jess and Lidia

I burst into tears all over again. They were the best friends I could ask for.

"Mali, I know it's hard leave them, but you'll work through it," Mom said. "Take your clothes and shoes to the U-HAUL."

"Okay, Mom."

I went upstairs to get the huge box. I looked around the practically empty room. Then I saw the necklace. It was a silver puzzle piece on a chain. Inscribed on it was the word "friends". I immediately put it on. Jess had the one that said "best" and Lidia had the one that said "forever". I whispered, "I won't forget you." Then I picked up the heavy box and headed to the U-HAUL.

I set the box in the U-HAUL and went to get in the car. I sat in the passenger's seat and waited for my mom to come. She came and started the car. I buckled my seat belt, and we left. Mom turned on some of her music from the 80s. I quickly got out my iPhone and put my earbuds in. Before I knew it, I had fallen asleep.
