Candles

Don't Own
This is set before she falls in volume 21.
Tohru Honda, brown haired ditz, was walking through town one day when she saw a small store. She had never seen it before, and she decided to wander in and browse, maybe even buy some gifts. She saw it was a Candle Shoppe, filled with all sorts of candles. From scented beach candles to citronella candles, all types of candles were there.
She picked up an orange scented candle, nestled in against all the others, calling to her. Sniffing the wax, there was an appealing scent, pumpkin pie. It's Kyo. He's a softy at heart, and this fits him. She moved on to the next row, musing on that revelation. She picked up a lavender colored one gently, noting the smell was the same as the color. Yuki is always gardening, and this smells like the lavender he always plants. The lavender candle called to her, but she put it down, still looking, not ready to commit to one. There was a green candle that smelled like bayberry, reminding her of Hatori and his scented soap. She had found that out went she had been sick, and he came to examine her. There was a short tapered yellow citronella candle that reminded her of Akito, and her sickly violent mood swings.
Finally, in the far back of the store, almost when she had finished browsing, there was a small rose-colored candle that she saw, flanked by a commanding black candle smelling sharply of blackberries, and on the right, a powerful white one. Next to them, there was a bright red candle that was hugging a brightly pure white one. That's strange; those three candles remind me of Hana, Uo, and myself. Those other candles are like Mom and Dad. It's almost like fate, these candles that remind me of my friends and family. She decided to purchase them, picking up the rose one with reverence and care. She held the tears until she reached the park on her way home, finally bawling her eyes out like a baby.
When she finally reached home, Yuki asked why she had been crying, because she was still sniffling. She simply responded, "My mom and I went candle shopping every month for our family shrine, and I just realized how much candles can remind you of people when you are just looking with an unblemished eye." She pulled out the lavender one, and gave it to him, inhaling the scent as she walked past him.
Tohru had known that when her mom died, candles would have to be bought, but she didn't think it would be this hard to face it.
