What's a man without a future? I'd have to answer me, Jack O'Neill. It took me a long time to realize I had one again since losing it after Charlie died and then joining SG-1. But it took me all of an hour to realize that I had lost it again. That feeling of hope and expectation for the next day, for five, ten years from now, had all hinged on one person: Samantha Carter. A woman who just told me she was getting married and not to me.

I don't have anything to look forward to anymore. I don't care about my career, defeating the Goa'uld is as impossible a task as ever, I don't have a family, or any ambitions. What am I supposed to do? Just live everyday, sitting behind this blasted desk, doing endless paperwork, and dying a little each day knowing that good men and women are losing there lives while I mourn a lost love who never really loved me back.

"General?" Carter is standing in my doorway.

"Carter?"

"I just…I thought you should know that I broke up with Pete."

My heart pounds. "I'm sorry, Carter."

Suddenly, the future doesn't look so bleak.
