Consciousness
A Bleach Fanfiction
The first thing she became conscious of was the silence.
Absolute silence.
She opened her eyes and blinked at the brightness. Candles. Everywhere, the whole room was alight with the gentle glow of innumerable candles. She looked around, uncertain, wincing as the ache and soreness tore through her with even the slightest of movements. She swallowed. At least he was gone. They were gone.
A flicker of the candles made her suddenly aware of not being alone. She turned towards the window, resolute against her protesting muscles and gasped when she saw him.
"U-ulquiorra?" She called, confused. "You-... how... where... Where is this place?" She asked him, her voice strangely breathless to her ears.
He didn't reply but proceeded to snuff the candles out one by one. She waited for his reply, gritting her teeth in silent impatience, yet unable to tear her gaze away as she followed his movements around the vast chamber with her eyes. When he finally turned towards her, she looked away, afraid of being caught staring. She felt the weight of his glance, the moment lasting like a seeming eternity as her cheeks started to warm under his constant regard. She thanked the heavens for the cloaking darkness as she pretended to contemplate the intricate patterned ceiling, not quite seeing the beautifully engraved clouds and the skilfully embedded crystals that reflected the light from the candles, glinting like stars in a deep velvet blue sky. After an infinitesimal moment, he turned away and continued his task.
When the last candle was finally blown out, the room was cast in total darkness and it took her a moment to adjust to the lack of light. Thus it was with a startled gasp that she suddenly beheld him standing right beside the bed.
Why was it that her heart always accelerated whenever this arrancar was near? She wondered briefly to herself even as she tried to stifle another gasp when he suddenly bent down. It was as if time slowed and history was taking notes and she could only watch, in suspended fascination, unable to move away as mixed emotions spun inside her head and heart.
In the darkness of the room, his eyes glittered like emeralds reflecting the light of a hot flame. Absolute breathlessness overcame her and then she felt the touch of his hand on her brow as he gently swept her hair away.
"Orihime..."
