Forges in the Sky
Chapter 1
The New Recruit
Simon fell to the ground. His mind was a black swirl and his vision was blurred to the full extent of reality. But this wasn't reality, this was some freaky dimension where monsters come charging at you from nowhere. He could just make out the outline of some giant thing that was blocking the sun. If there was sun in this place. He wished he could just sink into the ground and never be seen again. But that was just not an option. He tried to blink, but nothing happened. Why was this monster alien thing taking so long? Was time slowed down? Simon started to cry, but no sound came from his lips. Why was this happening to him? Why him? Or could this just be his imagination? Was he already dead, able to see only this frozen picture, his thoughts going in a continuous circle around his head? Would this image and thought die away as well? He didn't know.
A feeble suggestion came into his head at that moment. His mind was playing tricks on him. Yes, that was it. He was just dreaming. It was a comforting thought but Simon knew the reality. He was going to die. He tried once more to blink, and this time succeeded. His mind was released and his vision moisturised. There was a dark brown figure towering above him, gleaming red eyes and no clothes but a rag. Its nose was stubby and short, its arms were muscled beyond belief and its fingers were all pointing towards him. But most terrifying of all were what his eyes brought him to see. At the end of the strong arm, the sweaty hand and the gruesome fingers were claws. Claws gone yellow from million's of years spent buried in the ground, claws that could wrap around his throat and take it off his head, claws that were sharper than swords and stronger than a blazing fire. Claws pointing towards him.
Everything flashed and an arrow, clearly aimed at the creatures head, came flying down from above and nearly hit his own. The thing turned and roared, to face a feeble but determined little boy with another arrow knocked into his crossbow. The arrow flew and this time hit its target. The monster buckled its knees and started to topple backwards. Simon had only seconds to gather his senses and roll out of the way as it flew to the ground and landed with a crash where he had been only seconds before.
