A/N: its a little too long and i'm certainly not happy with the writing style...but working in the pediatric floor threw this plot bunny at me. Hope you enjoy

John awoke to the sounds of mewling on his chest and heat. He heard, as Mary shifted from under Dean and moved Sam from his chest before his crusty eyes opened. He sat up, as he shushed Dean who woke up to the Sam's mewling.

John looked over his head to meet Mary;s worried eyes. Sam;s fever had not broken yet and it had been 8 hours - too long for a 5 month old to be tolerating a fever of 101.

"Gimme" Dean held out tiny hands at Mary who was trying unsuccessfully to nurse Sam to quiet him down. John rolled off the bed to get more medicine and he took Sam from Mary and carefully laid him on Dean's lap as Mary supported both Dean and Sam on her lap.

Both parents froze as Sam stopped whimpering and buried his red face in Deans chest.

"Sam, you gotta stop being sick ok? It makes momma and daddys heart go ouchie." Dean chided softly at Sam's wet eyes.

To their amazement, Sam's eyes grew heavy as he went into a dreamless pain free sleep soothed by the lullaby of Dean's heartbeat. Both parents smiled...they sure had a great contender for Sammy's protector.
