Valkyrie

An Owari no Seraph fanfiction

The first time they met was also the first time Yuu nearly died.

So yeah, that didn't go over too well.

The boy was just minding his own business, getting a black coffee to mirror the shitty day he was having and a flowerpot or something had dropped from a balcony above and hit him in the goddamn head, killing him instantly.

That was what was supposed to happen, the strange blond boy said matter-of-factly, if I hadn't knocked you out of the way.

At that point, Yuu looked at him strangely, as was the conditioned response to crazy talk, asked if he was insane and dashed away in the opposite direction.

The next time they met, there was a bus, a red light and a tug on the back of Yuu's collar that sent him sprawling on the ground.

No, scratch that, right on top of the same boy that saved his life immediately scrambles off of him and asks if the boy is alright. The stranger smiles at him in return.

"Only if you are."

It stuck with Yuu for some strange reason, even long after he had left. Days continued, weeks passed and the accidents increased in intensity.

Every single time, the strange boy saved him.

It got to the point that Yuu had actually suspected that this boy was causing the accidents. When Yuu said as much to the boy, he actually laughed.

The smile on his face wasn't natural in the least.

"I wouldn't do that."

And Yuu was just supposed to take this stranger's word for it?

No matter how many times this boy had saved his life, he wasn't about to trust him.

In the last time they met, a dog had tried to attack him.

Was it even a dog?

It looked like a canine with sharp teeth and two heads. Strange black protrusions from its back.

It looked like a monster.

He couldn't even utter a single word before the beast attacked him.

He couldn't even close his eyes.

It was over in a second. But he didn't die.

The beast lay in front of him.

Blue fire ate away at its body.

That…that strange boy was standing in front of it. Fire…Fire burned from his hand?!

"You…! Your hand is…! You're burnt!"

"Ah?" The boy seems to have noticed him.

He smiles. "…You're…very kind."

"Huh?!"

"I'm ok. Don't worry." The boy continues. He closes his fist and the fire disappears, "But more importantly, are you hurt?"

"N-no?"

"Good."

"Good?! W-what was that…what the hell did you do?!"

"…I thought it'd be enough if I could stop them…even with the Death Flag planted in your soul. I thought…" He closes his eyes, takes a deep breath, "It should've been me. I dragged you into this…I'm sorry."

"Dragged me into this?"

"I…didn't want to make you remember me. I should've never let you meet me. If you hadn't met me, you wouldn't..."

"I know you?"

"…Do you know a boy named Hyakuya Mikaela?"

Hyakuya…Mikaela.

He doesn't have a face to the name, but memories flood his mind.

A boy with a sweet smile and strange eyes.

"…!"

"You remembered me…?"

Mika looks surprised, then his expression softens into that smile that Yuu had seen before.

Sad. A hint of regret in those expressive blue eyes.

"You were always too kind for your own good, Yuu-chan. You should've forgotten about me."

"Why…"

"I promised I would protect you. And I will. I will end this continuous circle of death. I'll remove the Death Flag on your soul." Mika averts his gaze, looking towards the night sky.

"Even if I have to sacrifice myself. I swear I will protect you."
