The idea just struck me… ha-ha, I hope you enjoy it!
Disclaimer: I don't own Titanic.
How come we don't say I love you enough?
'Til it's too late, it's not too late.
"I love you Jack," she whispered, her voice uncharacteristically raspy from the cold. She had to get it out though, no matter how much pain she was in, she had to let him know.
She faintly felt him grasp her hand and she shivered when his cold skin came in contact with hers.
"No…don't say your goodbyes, Rose. Don't you give up. Don't do it." He managed out as she watched his body shake violently.
"I…I-I'm not. I just needed you to know." But deep down she knew he had already known. "But I regret that I waited until…..now to tell you. I waited too long Jack, and now we don't have all the time in the world t-to be happy and in love. I'm sorry, I'm so…sorry."
"Stop. You don't have anything to be sorry for. It doesn't matter if we have seconds or years, as long as I'm with you I-I'm fine. Winning that ticket Rose, was the best thing that ever happened to me." He paused and she felt like crying as he struggled for breath to talk. "It brought me to you. And I'm thankful for that, I'm thankful."
His eyes began to droop then and she felt tears well in her eyes but she wouldn't let him do that.
"Jack! Jack, don't leave, stay with me…" Her voice was weak and her attempt to shake his hand was feeble but she managed to wake him up.
"I won't, not ever but….but you need to listen to m-me, Rose. I love you. More than you'll ever know and you have to promise me something before it's too late." He whispered as his lip trembled and his hand shook but his deep blue gaze remained unwavering on her face.
She felt the tears begin to fall and she wanted to say that it wouldn't ever be too late but she couldn't find her voice.
"You're going to get out of this….you're going to go on and you're going to make babies and watch them grow and you're going to die an old lady, warm in your bed. Not here. Not this night. Do you understand me?"
She didn't like the way this conversation was going. Jack was going to survive too and they would go on and make babies and watch them grow and die an old couple warm in their bed, she told herself.
"You must do me this honor….promise me you will survive…..that you will never give up…..no matter what happens…..no matter how hopeless…..promise me now and never let go of that promise." He struggled to get the sound out but she heard him clearly.
"No, only if you promise me first." She said stubbornly as she gripped his hand tighter.
"Rose…."
"I'm not going anywhere without you Jack. I'm involved now, if you let go…..I'm letting go with you." She said with all the strength she could muster as she gazed into his eyes fiercely.
She watched him as he remembered those as the words he had said to her when they first met.
"I promise." He whispered and slowly bent down to kiss their intertwined hands.
She almost cried harder at his words. Those two words that somehow pushed out all feelings of pain and regret and suddenly replaced them with a warmth in her heart. A warmth that she could feel between her and Jack that said they could survive this. They would survive this.
"I promise too." She said a small strained smile playing on her face. She knew now was no time to be smiling but she couldn't help it. She and Jack were going to live. They were going to everything they said they would and more. This wasn't the end.
It wasn't too late.
