Once We Were Young

Prologue

"You big ninny! You're nothing but a scared-y cat! Lily is a chicken! Lily is a chicken!"

"Shut-up James! I am not a chicken! I can do anything you can do! Just watch me!" The little girl jumped on the big log then off into the giant mud puddle. "See?" She smirked up at the boy. "I can do anything you can do!" The little boy just stuck his tongue out at her.

"James? Will you take me to the fair? Mommy said that if you took me she would let me go."

"I don't want to go Lily."

"Please? 'Tunia won't take me."

"Sirius is coming over Lily."

"He can go too."

"No!"

"Fine!"

"Fine!" The little girl stuck her tongue out and the little boy returned the gesture. Lily screwed up her face while James concentrated hard on her hair. Suddenly James was laughing and Lily was shrieking. The little girls red hair was now a nasty shade of green. Then James realized what she had done to his own hair. It was now purple with pink spots.

"Mommy! Mommy! Look what Lily done to my hair! Mommy!" James took off towards his house.

"Mrs. Potter! Mommy! James made my hair green! Turn it back! NOW! Mommy! Mrs. Potter!" Lily ran just as fast after him.

"I'm telling you Rose, Lily has great potential to be a witch. Mark my words, in a few years she'll be getting an acceptance letter to Hogwarts."

"Oh Sharon, do you really think so? I think it would just be wonderful to have a little witch in the family."

"Well, look at all of the things she has done to James when she gets mad at him." The two women chuckled over their tea as they remembered the past years between their children.

"You're in so much trouble!"

"Please don't tell my mom James!"

"Oh…I'm telling."

"Sirius, don't let him tell!"

"It's not my concern. You were the one that broke her vase. Not me." The two boys had smug looks on their faces as they watched Lily worry frantically over her mother's prized vase, which she had accidentally broken. Lily made a whining noise.

"Oh, it's alright Lily, we'll go have Mum fix it. Let's go." James said finally cracking.

Lily's face broke into a grin, "Thank-you James!" She rushed over and gave him a hug. He shrugged her off.

"Mum! I got in! I'm going to be a witch!" Lily ran down the stairs screaming, a piece of thick parchment clutched in her hand. "Oh! I've got to go and tell Mrs. Potter!" Lily ran out of the house not seeing the look her sister gave her. "Mrs. Potter! Oh Mrs. Potter! I got in! I'm going to be a witch!"

"Oh, Lily! That's great! James, Lily got into Hogwarts too. Isn't that great dear? You can come with us tomorrow to buy school supplies." Mrs. Potter smiled warmly at Lily while James rolled his eyes.
