How I survived the modern kitchen, I'll never know.
However, I refused to give up and settled on what seemed simplest; rosemary chicken. I sighed, feeling useless. The reason for my efforts seemed ridiculous and unrealistic but I had to find some sort of excuse in order to see her again.
Elena was currently in one of the three bathrooms, cleaning up for a horrible excuse she called dinner. I sighed and without any effort left in me, decided it seemed well enough. I cleared the table, set it and leaned against the counter as I waited for her.
I hadn't remembered the last time I cooked for a woman. The vaguest memory held in my mind was 1924 for a woman named Selene; it was a breakfast with the essentials such as bacon and eggs and as I recalled, I seemed to do well. But there was nothing with meaning behind it; nothing like this.
Of course, even I tried to cover up the concealed gist for what I was proposing tonight; a friendship. That's all it was. It's all it ever would be and I sensed as if that's what Elena wanted.
And although the idea of her being with a Salvatore brother infuriates me, I dealt with it.
It was strange, her being here. The impression of knowing Elena was currently in Klaus's new home by choice almost bothered me; but I knew Klaus's obligations for the day.
"Ah, brother," His laughter interrupted my thoughts as I slowly looked up to find him dressed in one of his best suits; Armani, I guessed. Apparently it's a large designer of this decade. I folded my arms, waiting for a snide remark to escape his lips.
Klaus noticed my expression, but seemed to ignore it as he took a sip of my wine. "I take it Elena is comfortable, here?"
"I'm not sure comfortable is the word I'd use, Klaus." I corrected.
Klaus walked over to me, patting his hand on my shoulder. I had the decency to stay put under his touch. "As long as you're here and alone, I'm sure she'll be fine." He said, his tone mocking.
"I'm always alone," I reminded him. "Permanently."
I watched Klaus's carefree expression deepen into a furrowing brow. "No need to dig up the past, Elijah." He whispered, sauntering away.
I raised a brow. "Where are you going?" I called after him.
Klaus turned and smirked. "I have a lovely lady awaiting my arrival."
Despite my judgment on that relationship, I ignored the many comments trigging at my lips. "Be careful with her, Klaus."
Klaus nodded lightly. "She means something to me, brother. I will."
As I watched him leave, I tilted my head down.
