For those newcomers who don't know (and, yes, I'm a New-Who fan, but I'm been well-versed on the originals), Susan Foreman is the granddaughter of the Doctor. She was his first companion; and, at some point, he left her behind on Earth.

Disclaimer: Doctor Who is the property of some other lucky person. I respect that person and all those involved in the process that produces such an ingenious series; this is merely speculation turned into innocent fiction.

It had happened in the blink of an eye.

Smiling and screaming and laughing and crying and running, oh, running running running for life, for each other, for all of space and time...

"Someone call an ambulance!"

"Are you okay?"

And he had taken her hand and everything was all right and they were there, together, and time had a meaning again, space had a meaning, it was solid, it was limiting and limitless at the same time, even if He had left her behind...

"Dear? Honey, are you all right?"

She looked up, blinked. Felt the ground beneath hands, felt the warmth of her skin, the smoothness...felt the youth of this new body.

This new body that hadn't existed until a second ago.

And time had passed, and she had grown, physically and mentally, and he alongside her. Together. And one day, he passed away, and she continued, waiting, watching, wondering. Wishing for the past, in its faults and in its glories, to come again.

The woman looking at her, concerned. She was waiting for a response.

"Y-yes. I...I'm good as new," she replied, finally. Gulped. Looked around.

New eyes. That would take some getting used to.

"Were you hurt at all?"

"Hurt?" Hurt? No. She was...

That was her first regeneration. That's what had happened.

And this would be her legacy, from now until the end of time.

Because she had time again.

"The crash, dear? That truck...you saved those other children. We've called the police, the driver looks completely wasted-crashed into a tree after that close shave, but that's what you'd expect...but did you get hit?"

There had been a truck...she had been walking down the street. No, not her. Her past self had been walking down the street, and...and...a truck had been swerving, and there were two kids in the road...and her elderly self had run...

"I could have sworn I heard the most awful sound, though. As if...but you don't look hurt. A tad bit stunned, but I can't begrudge you that."

So the older woman hadn't been close to the event as it had unfolded; she hadn't seen what she had looked like before the truck hit.

Well, that made things easier, at least.

The girl cleared her throat. "I'm...fine. Thank you; now, I must be going."

And, without another word, Susan Foreman did what she did best. She ran.

I imagine the other woman, the one speaking to her...well, she was just a nameless face a second ago, and then suddenly she took on the appearance of Jackie Tyler. I'm not sure if that's possible, so think of the concerned woman what you will.
