The sun beat down upon his back, causing his throat to cry out for water.
Step, step, watching, waiting.
The lake provided relief, yet it showed no mercy on his blue, blue eyes, blinding him until they adjusted to the bright.
The sun, it beats fast, furious, like my heart does when you're near.
"You're alone," a soft voice whispered from behind, "You're always alone."
Can't believe I'm talking, speaking to you, and you're looking at me with those eyes, so bottomless, so blue.
"No, Swallowtail," he said, "I'm never alone."
I love you, I love you, but I see the dark shadow creeping, waiting for you with every step you take.
"I love you," she replied, amber eyes showing warmth and defiance and the ferocity that love brings fools like her.
I'm watching, I'm waiting, for every word you'll say, every breath you'll take.
"He never leaves me," he spoke, after a long, strangled silence, his face saying more than she'll ever hear.
Forever, forever, by your side he'll be.
"It doesn't bother me," she mewed.
I see the shadow shrinking away, from me, from you, from good and love and hope.
"Love," he choked out, voice pained and saddened.
That's the closest you get for now. But don't worry. I have forever.
AN: This serves as both a follow-up for Starry Night and a special request from Spotty. I must say, this is my favorite piece now, and found Swallowtail to be a great character to write about. Thanks to those who voted in the poll, and who visited The Miscellany. You guys are great.
