AN: There's definitely more to Mellie than just being a "terrifying political animal." I do not own Scandal or its wonderful characters.

It's late in the afternoon, a time when the sun bathes the nursery in beautiful light and the room is warm. She chooses this time because the White House is in a lull, the West Wing thrumming with activity; so she knows she won't be disturbed.

Fitz is usually in a meeting and she can be alone with their baby. She no longer tries to join in on his time with the baby having gotten the message loud and clear that he doesn't want company then. She wants to have some time alone with Teddy where he won't feel the almost palpable animosity between his parents because she's always thought babies were able to sense those types of things, and she doesn't want that for her son.

She slips in shutting the door softly behind her and lifts him out of his crib. He was beginning to fuss but quietens done some when she cradles him close to her chest.

As she sits down in the rocking chair, she hums a soft tune to him. He continues to whimper and she can see the tears begin to form. He reaches a hand out towards her as she lifts her blouse.

When he latches on, she lets him grasp her pinkie as she strokes his cute little nose with her index finger. He looks at her as she coos at him. He begins to hum rock-a-bye baby to him as she rocks in the chair.

"I love you baby," she whispers to him and he sleepily looks back not understanding what she said. "I'll promise I'll never let anything happen to you."

He continues to eat even though his eyes are closed and she feels the surge of love she usually does when she's this close to him. Fitz claims she's devoid of maternal instinct but it may just be that she doesn't flaunt it because she's sure the love and fierce protectiveness she feels now is definitely maternal.

As she adjusts him he wakes and wears a look of such discontent that she can't help but chuckle a bit. "Don't worry baby," she says as she helps him latch on again.

This time he holds onto her breast and she can't help but think of his father in that moment. He doesn't like to be disturbed much either.

"I won't leave you, ever," she says as she presses a kiss to his forehead. He looks up at her and she thinks that he smiles at her. She continued to hum to him even after he finishes and just rocks him to sleep against her chest.

She always cherishes her time with Teddy; for as much as she didn't like babies, he was her baby and she loved him no matter what.

Mellie hadn't noticed the door crack open a bit. Fitz had been on his way back from getting a fresh shirt from their bedroom after he spilled some scotch on himself and had heard her humming.

He hadn't known that she nursed Teddy, thinking she just expressed the milk for him. He would later admit to himself that that scene was part of what convinced him to get his act together; hallucinating his wife nursing their son now there was a sign.
