"I'm sorry," Dean says to the door. "Sorry I-"
He doesn't know what to say. He can't take back what he's done. He can't make anything right. Another promise to Kevin broken.
Dean stares at the door. He hears the sound of Sam slamming it closed, though that has been hours ago.
He remembers Kevin's words, that the fighting is stupid. But he can't make Sam forgive him. Hell, he can't even forgive himself. Maybe it's about time Sam had enough.
It's that two seconds of hope that's getting to Dean now. When Sam said "I promise," Dean was naive enough to believe he meant it, to think maybe they could work it out somehow. Maybe that's his innate stubbornness talking. Maybe he should know when to quit.
But Dean never did know when to quit. So he stares at the door and thinks that maybe if he tries real hard, he can mean it when he tries to say he'd change it all if he could.
But he won't.
I tried to write something after "The Purge," but I couldn't. It was too painful. I guess maybe I'm just getting used to it now. I really can't wait until they actually make some progress on this issue. It doesn't have to be fixed all at once, just a little bit here and there would be nice. Guess we'll have to see what next week brings.
