AN: Alright, so I haven't written fanfiction in a while (I'd say maybe...4 years?) and I really wasn't that good then either. So...what happens when the school semester is over and I have nothing to do? That's right, fanfiction. It's VERY short and kinda crappy, but hey, if people like it, I might consider writing some more less-crappy stuff. This is like a road test, you call the shots.

Disclaimer thing: If I was JK Rowling and owned Harry Potter I would not have student loans, an old car, and live on easy mac. You figure it out :D

"I don't think we can be friends anymore, Severus."

The red head's voice was low, her brilliant green eyes trained on the flagstones between them. Her hands were clasped in front of her, knuckles white. She hated to do this but the truth was glaring her in the face.

"Wait, no..Lily if you'd just listen-" Severus started, taking a step in her direction, but Lily shied away, shivering slightly in the balmy late May weather.

"I did listen, Severus. I did listen, out in the courtyard today with Avery and Macnair as you stood there and called me a mudblood. Friends don't do that." Her cheeks flushed red and her eyes glinted with the same anger and astonishment that overtook her earlier that day when the words left his lips. "You insulted me, right in front of everyone. I know James and his friends were always a sore spot with you, but I always defended you. Always." She turned away, hugging her arms around herself and sniffing back a tear that threatened to fall. Despite the house difference, Severus had always been her friend, her closest friend. And now he'd turned around and stabbed her in the back, his words clinging like barbs in her skin.

The black haired boy didn't know what to say, running a hand through his matted hair he walked after her, clasping her elbow and spinning her back around to face him.

"I didn't know what I was saying! The guys…they- I don't know, I act different around them and I don't know what I'm doing.."

"You're changing, that's what. You've changed. You aren't the same boy I knew back home…my friend, I don't even know who you are anymore." The red head huffed, blinking fast, determined not to cry as she lost her best friend. Merlin…her best friend…damnit, she sniffed, bringing a hand up to rub her eye. Severus frowned, his own chest feeling tight and he wished for the hundredth time that he could go back and take it back.

"Lily, I'm sorry." The pleading note was evident in his voice and he stepped closer, his thumb reaching out to brush a tear that threatened the corner of her eye. Lily batted him away, her gaze turning cold.

"No. You're not. And I never want to see you again."

"But Lily-!"

"You made your choice Severus, now live with it." Her voice was deadly low, and the echo off the stone walls gave it an unearthly feeling. Severus was stunned, mouth slightly open as he watched the only girl he'd ever cared for turn on her heel and walk away. Never again would he see her smile at him or laugh at one of his feeble joke. Never again would they sit beneath the trees in the nice weather and study for their exams while he basked in her beauty. He wasn't stupid, he knew she was beautiful beyond compare, and that blasted Potter didn't even know what he was wrapping around his blood finger. Never again, and it was because of him, he had driven her away. He would never be able to gain her trust back.

He was still standing in the same position long after she'd turned the corner out of sight before it hit him. He felt sick, disgusted, vile…she had warned him but she was right. He had made his choice. He put his head in his hands, clenching his teeth together and pushing away the burning in his eyes.

"You…idiot."
