She jerked her eyes up, dirty blonde hair swaying gently. Her dark lips parted slightly in shock, a strong contrast to her alabaster pale skin.

Her wispy breathing sounded loud in her ears, heart thudding, leaping, within her heaving chest.

She slowly lifted a foot, trailing her toes along the dusty wooden floor, before setting it down, resting only the ball of her foot and her toes on the wood. The light pink nail polish on her toenails seemed almost bright in the dull house.

She padded softly further down the hallway, listening for any more unusual noises.

A doorway stood slightly ajar. Sunlight streamed through it, lighting up the dust in the air. It looked like shooting stars against the dark-brown-almost-black backdrop of the wooden hall.

She edged closer to the doorway, large, pale blue eyes almost glowing in curiosity.

She peered into the gap. Her eyes widened, and she let out a gasp. He shut her eyes tightly, gathering herself, before humming in thought, wondering exactly – Why was this here? Was it even… Real?

The door pushed open, enough to fit her. She slipped into the room, not focusing too strongly on what she was doing.

There was a water fountain. The water glowed a pale (watery) blue, shimmering lightly. On its rim was inscribed:

Fortune

She pulled an old coin – a drachma – from a pocket on the front of her simple blue dress. She flicked it into the fountain, where it dissolved with a golden misty colour and a hiss.

She closed her eyes, and backed out.

The door slammed behind her.

She spun around, and fled the house, as though the fires of Hell were after her, bare feet picking up dust on their soles.

She turned to look back at the house. It had dissolved into the dark sky.

Something grabbed her shoulder, and shook her. She sat up, breathing hard, her brother's hand on her shoulder. Her duvet pooled around her waist, blankets warm, cold night air biting at her uncovered arms.

She tightened her hands around the blankets, but found one hand wouldn't close properly, as it held a thick metal disk.

She put her hand in her lap, and opened it. A coin glittered from her palm.
