The air was humid and barely breathable when Reid woke up. It felt laden with electricity and sure enough, in the distance thunder was rolling.
He listened to the sounds slowly approach. They mixed with the sounds next door, in his living-room, where someone was trying to pick his way to the bathroom in darkness, not wanting to disturb Spencer's sleep by switching the lights on.
A sudden, ear-piercingly loud clap of thunder startled him, made him push away the damp sheets and sit up on the edge of the bed. The crackling, sharp hiss that indicated a tree had been hit sent shivers down his spine. He imagined the tree, standing around somewhere, unsuspecting, living its life in daily routine, the regular change of seasons, of temperature, of weather… and suddenly BOOM.
The shower in his bathroom was turned on while outside heavy rain started falling, drumbeats like galloping hearts on his window pane. Rain was good. It meant the temperature would drop, the air would clear, an hour or so from now they were probably looking at a beautiful summer's day.
The thunderstorm had brought the rain and the rain was bringing the relief from the slowly suffocating conditions of the past few days. A scary moment, followed by comfort…
His bedroom door opened, the mattress behind him dipped, lips brushed against his neck.
"Everything okay?", Morgan asked quietly.
"Lightning struck, that's all", Reid replied.
