Chapter 1: The Transfer

If you would've told Cheryal Boggs that she was going to be attending Monsters University some years ago, she would of laughed in your face. She always had her heart on the medical program at Fear Tech, Monsters University rival college. While both schools were known for their Scaring programs, she would've rather they all disappeared off the face of the Earth. She wasn't a fan of Scarers. And if you asked her why she would go into a heated rant that would make you regret ever asking in the first place. Yet, here she was. Her Junior year, having to be transferred to her rival college as she rode the bus towards the campus.

Cheryal was a 19-year-old thin purple monster with four legs, tentacle arms and large hazel eyes behind thick black-framed glasses and was wearing a green cardigan sweater. She was currently reading a medicine magazine as she waited for her stop. She had her heart seat on becoming a surgical doctor. Six more years and she would finally have her PhD. It was a dream that she always had when she was a little girl. To be a doctor. Not just any doctor though. She wanted to be surgeon. She wanted to be where the action was, to save lives. And she knew, that the more she studied, the more focused she was, she could accomplish that dream. Seeing that she was coming up to her stop, she pulled the bus line to signal that she was getting off. Once off the bus with her bags, she looked up at the gate and sighed.

"Just two more years Cheryal...Just two more years and then you can go back to Fear Tech." she told herself as she went through.

She casually glanced around as she made her way to registration. She frowned as she looked around. She could see other monsters playing games, chatting with other monsters, or trying to get to their dorm rooms or classes.

"Okay where is-"

"Hi there!"

The purple monster blinked seeing a cream-colored crab-like monster with three eyes smiling at her.

"Uh... Hi, I'm-"

"I'm Shay! I'm from the R. A.! If you're looking for registration, it's that-a way!" The female crab monster replied, interrupting Cheryal as she pointed at a building.

"Right... thanks..." Cheryal told her, heading in that direction.

If it was one thing that she didn't care for, it was people interrupting her. Coming up to front desk of registration, she started to greet the green-skinned furred monster.

"I'm Cheryal-"

"Hey there, I'm Ray! Here's your orientation packet! Good luck on your first year!"

"I'm not a freshman. I'm a transfer. Where can-"

"Sorry about that. You can drop your here and get your photo taken, you go see Zay!"

Cheryal felt her smile falter each time that she was interrupted. It was really getting on her nerves.

"Thanks..."

Moving to where Ray suggested, Cheryal sat down on the stool, ready for her ID photo to be taken.,

"Say Hooray!" Zay, a lime-green skinned colored monster with five eyes smiled at her.

"Hooray..."

Once the photo was taken, Cheryal dropped her smile and at her student ID, she placed it in the pocket of her sweater.

"Okay, now how do I find-"

"Okay, everyone, I'm May! And I'm going to be giving you this orientation tour on this beautiful day!" A pink sknieed monster with small redish wing, a single blue eye and red air, told a group of students as she lead them.

"I hate the Smile Squad..." Cheryal muttered to herself as she joined them.

Cheryal paid little attention to what her tour guide said. Most of it was focusing on the Scaring aspect on what the school offered, and that wasn't she was there for. She was a medical student. She was interested to see anything that had to do with Scaring. While her group seemed fascinated by Scare School building, Cheryal just rolled her eyes. Other than the Scare School, she did find the rest of the tour educational. Helping her locate where the library, the cafeteria, her classes and dorm room was. Which of course when the tour got to the dorm rooms, Cheryal removed herself from the tour to get her room key.

"Here you are. Boggs. Room 215. Your roommate checked in a few minutes before you did."

Cheryal nodded, not wanting to stay any longer and made her way up to her room. She only had one preference on her dormmate request sheet. No Scaring Majors. She didn't need their self-entitled, ego=filled reckless dirt-bags ruining her chances of earning her degree. Those idiots back at Fear Tech gave her even more evidence as to why she hated them. Making her way up to her room, she let out a sigh.

"Please don't be a Scare Major. Please don't be a Scare Major. Please don't be a Scare Major..."

Opening the door she saw a small monster standing in the middle of the room. Going in, Cheryal saw that the monster was a pink soft-skinned female monster with golden curl, horns on the side of her head, five eyes wearing a blue dress. Seeing the purple monster in the door way, the monster went over and shook her tentacle.

"Hi! I'm Sheri Squibbles! Your roommate! What's your name?"

"Cheryal Boggs. And that's spelled with an Y-A-L. Not Y-L."

"Nice to meet you Cheryal! I took the bed on the left if you don't mind."

"Not at all." Cheryal replied, sitting her bags on the bed. "I have three older brothers and two older sisters. Any bed is a good bed for me" Unzipping her suitcase, she cast a quick glance at the smaller monster. "You're...not a Scaring major...are you?"

"Oh goodness no," Sheri laughed, waving her hand a bit. "I'm majoring in Textile and Appeal. What about you?"

"I'm earning my PhD in surgical medicine. I want to be a Surgeon."

"Any reason why? If you don't mind me asking."

"Oh not at all. My best friend was killed when we were Hich School, and they didn't have a surgeon at the hospital when she came in. If they did, she would still be here."

"Oh, I'm sorry about your friend."

"There's no need to apologize, it wasn't your fault."

Sheri nodded. The two spent the rest of the evening in silence. Unpacking their things as they sat their room up. The smaller monster had placed up a calender that had photos of cute animals, some heavy metal posters of her favorite band and a couple of posters with inspiration quotes. Her bed had two pillows with black pillow cases on them with a logo of one of the bands that she listened to. Her blanket was a dark blue. On Cheryal's side, her walls were decorated with medical posters, posters of a jazz band that she liked to listen to, and a scheduling board. On her bed was a maroon colored blanket and pillows.

"You don't catch me as the heavy metal type."

A bit caught off guard, Sheri looked over at her roommate, seeing her looking at her posters. Looking up at one, she smiled.

"I get that a lot. I'm actually quite the partier. Where you here last year? I don't recall seeing you. Unless you're a freshman."

"Transfer actually. From Fear Tech."

"Really? You used to be at Fear Tech? Why did you transfer?"

While the question was harmless, it still didn't cause stop her from the memory and reason as to why she had to switch schools. It made her so angry. She wasn't really a fan of Monsters University. Well, she wasn't a big fan of their Scaring programming, and their medical school wasn't as good as the one when she was attending at her old college. Feeling her anger build up, she curled her tentacles into fists.

"It was the stupid Scarer Students fault!" she snapped. "Those idiots infested the medical school with Gypsy Fly moths! The infestation was so bad they had to shut down the school for two years!"

Sheri gasped. Gypsy Fly moths were insects that were multi-colored fluffy moths. They were known to be parasitic to certain trees and feast on bark and wood. By releasing them into a building, would cause them to devour the wood inside that building. She couldn't believe the Scare students at Fear Tech would do such a thing. While the fierce rivalry was no secret, she knew everyone insulted the rival students. Often calling them Fear Tech idiots or dummies when they did something stupid. Right now, she wanted to say those words. But not wanting to insult her new roommate because she went to Fear Tech, she decided to go with a different saying.

"Those Scare students were idiots to do that."

"Thank you! Someone who agrees with me!"

The smaller nodded in sympathy. What those students did was not only dangerous, but cost an entire section of the school to shut down and send some of their students away. She could see why those students would be very angry at the Scaring Majors for pulling such a cruel trick. The medical students probably didn't do a thing to deserve that type of treatment. Their focus was to help heal monsters.

"What did the school do to them? Suspend them?"

Cheryal snorted.

"They deserved to. All they got was community service! All because their parents were Scarers! We don't have a school and they get a slap on the wrist? f it was me I'd make those jerks disinfect the entire school!"

Sheri nodded. Not wanting her roommate to be upset anymore, she decided that it was time to cheer her up.

"Well you don't have to worry about them here. I know you're a bit upset with them, but let's not focus on what they did. Let's focus that you have a new opportunity to keep your dream to alive! To cheer you up, I'll take you out tonight! We can go to a restaurant close by! Your pick!"

"You really don't have to do that Sheri."

"Nonsense! It'll be great! And it can help you see more of the campus! I won't take no for an answer."

After a moment of staring at the smaller monster, Cheryal finally gave a sigh.

"Then I guess I don't have a choice, do I?" she replied with a smile.

"Nope! I'll be back, there's a few clubs that I want to sign up for. You want to come?"

Cheryal shook her head.

"I'll check it out later. I have a few more things to unpack."

"Alright then suit yourself. I'll see you later."

The purple monster couldn't help but shake her head a bit as she let out a smile. Her plan was just to ignore everyone till she was able to transfer back to Fear Tech. But now meeting her roommate, she was actually a bit glad to have met her. While she wasn't completely enthusiastic about her new school, she could at least admit that she had someone that would make it bearable staying there. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad after all.
