Severus Snape: Potions Master, Defense Against the Dark Arts Professor, Headmaster of Hogwarts
It wasn't exactly a pleasure to meet you, but I can't say that it was easy to say goodbye.
Huh. In my first year, if someone were to tell me that I'd have to write a eulogy about Professor Snape, I'd have told them they were crazy.
Cold and cynical, I wouldn't exactly call him the number one candidiate for best teacher. He was harsh and brutal to just about every student, except for the Slytherins, of course. He was feared by a number of students, and was even scary enough to be the worst fear of one of my fellow Gryffindors, Neville. Anyone who'd call him kind and compassionate would just be lying to themselves.
However, I have come to realize that amidst all these negative things about him, under these is a man with a whole lot of other admirable traits that I have only learned of recently.
Professor Snape was an immensly brave man. In fact, I'd call him brave enough to be in Gryffindor. Just kidding, he'd probably not appreciate me saying that. He had done so many things, dangerous things, that could have caused him his life, and in the end, they did. Professor Snape worked as a double agent whose loyalty was with and only to Professor Dumbledore. He fooled Death Eaters, even Voldemort himself, that he was on their side. With this, he was able to gather a whole lot of information that had helped the people of the Order of the Phoenix. Some people, including me, questioned his loyalty. But there is one thing about Professor Snape that had helped me understand the reason for all the good he had done.
Professor Snape is a man remarkably capable of loving, something I wouldn't have believed in the past with his cold and emotionless exterior. Never would I have imagined that he would be in love with my mother, Lily Potter, especially since they were still students. He loved her unconditionally and faithfully, and his love had kept me alive for all these years. His love was highly instrumental in the defeat of the Dark Lord, Voldemort. His love is what drove him to do all the good he had done. If it weren't for it, I might not even be here, delivering a eulogy in front of all of you.
I will be forever grateful for him and all he has done. Unfortunately, he had passed before I could give him a proper thank you. But perhaps I could express my gratitude by naming one of my future children after him. I had learned many things from him, and I'm not just talking about how to brew potions. He reminded me that one who is brave is highly capable of doing great things. He taught me that love can change a person for the better, bring out the best in them and ultimately, is a force that can greatly affect the course of history. I will forever remember him, and I'm sure you all will, too.
Farewell, Professor Snape, and until we meet again.
