Bellatrix Black isn't evil. No, certainly not, because children aren't born evil, just as martyrs aren't born as heroes. Maybe she does enjoy cursing people and maybe, she does hold a grudge (Alice Prewett was the only girl that ever tried to retaliate), but that doesn't mean she's evil. Different, maybe, but, she's definitely not wicked.
She's the kind of girl who smokes Muggle cigarettes just because she knows that the smell annoys her sisters and her mother and because it gives her that pleasant buzz of rebellion.
She sneaks out of her dormitory and slips out into the night, into the darkness. Some nights she meets Rodolphus and drives him wild under the fluid moonlight because it's all part of her game. Some nights, she creeps out alone and she lies on the grass with her head back, watching as the darkness engulfs her surroundings. She's always loved the darkness. It makes her feel whole and alive in a way nothing ever has done before.
And, yes, maybe she does know the best curses to make her enemies writhe in pain and maybe she does get a thrill, an unexplainable rush of adrenaline as she hears their screams but she's not insane. She's alive.
The story of Bellatrix Black ends one cold evening, when she joins a man who tells her that he can help her achieve everything and she can't help but fall in love with his frame of mind which is so similar to hers.
(It's a love for darkness, a hatred of the impure and a desire to kill torture and curse. It's called insanity.)
Bellatrix Black isn't evil. She's twisted but, she thinks to herself as she gazes up into the unhinged, beautiful eyes of her master, perhaps all the best people are.
