A Lily/James story with some Sirius/Marlene with those two being my two favorite pairings. Please enjoy!
Disclaimer- I never have and never will own Harry Potter
Mud splatters the bottom of two identical black robes. Feet slide through the wet grass that surrounds the now overflowing lake. A rough hand reaches out to find a slightly smaller one. Rain pelts down on the dreary setting and gray clouds block out the sun. Everyone else is huddling inside by the fire and yet... two students are out in the storm.
And they just don't care. Don't care that they have to scream to be heard over the whirling wind that blows against the leaves of the Whomping Willow. Don't give a shit that it's cold and wet and miserable. Miserable? It's never bad for them when they're together. James suddenly speeds up, pulling Lily behind him in the foolish way that always reminds her of his younger years, when he was foolishly energetic Gryffindor. She trails along, jogging to keep up as he yanks on her arm, but also trying to keep her dignity. Which is very hard to do when James is around.
He plops down on the soaked grass and pulls her down with him. Lily makes a face as the mud stains the bottom of her robes but doesn't complain. He points towards the Forbidden Forest, to what's waiting in front of the trees. And the duo stops and watches, smiling to themselves, as Sirius spins Marlene around him, the couple kicking up dirt and water in their wake. They're laughing, twirling as if they don't have a care in the world. And it looks fun... so fun. This time it's Lily who hops up and takes off, James grinning like crazy and trailing behind her. She grabs his hands, shivering against the cold, and pulls him close, stomping and sending droplets from the puddles flying. He twirls her and she spins, giggling like a little girl again and Marlene and Sirius stop and watch them. She stops spinning, dizzy and disoriented.
And then, they switch partners almost instinctively. Marlene and Lily taking turns spinning each other and just generally jumping around. Sirius and James, on the other hand, are doing some weird ballroom-tango that would be funny if they didn't have such a serious look on their face. (Although, Lily suspects they're joking around). Over the next hour, they switch around partners quite a bit and finally end with Sirius and Marlene sitting on a low branch of a large oak that's weaving it's way through the clearing, kissing and hugging, and James and Lily on the ground, arm wrapped around each other in a casual way that's still as romantic as Sirius and Marlene's snogging, watching as the rain lets up, finally.
The sky slowly starts to become clearer, the storm clouds drifting away and sunshine shines through. A faint rainbow forks across the late afternoon sky and they all stop what they're doing to watch it. Red blending into orange which morphs into a yellow-ish green that turns to an indigo color. Other students start to trail outside and although all four of the Gryffindors are soaked to the skin and shivering in the middle of the grounds, they just don't care. They've never cared. For she's Lily and he's James and Sirius and Marlene aren't any different and aren't important in that moment in any case. It's just Lily and James and for them, what they have now is eternal. The flame will never die if they can help it. For they're not sure what it is but they think it's... love?
