Cain considered himself an intelligent person. He understood people and why they did things. He could manipulate each movement they made and predict their actions long before even they. He knew why these creatures acted so foolishly, he didn't understand it, but he knew that each had one way or another of justifying itself.
This protected him from ever making a mistake that could lead to his demise. This knowledge of each thought and feeling others partook of allowed him to drift through this world without others unknown interferences. As long as he knew why they acted he was safe and could control the world surrounding each person.
But in the world there was one black area where he had no knowledge. He could never comprehend why Riff stayed besides him. Cain was danger, surrounded by murderers and all that brought fear into the eyes of children. He was wrong, a horror incarnate within a flesh husk and death would forever follow him. Riff had no reason to stay. His why was missing.
There was no reason for the man to stay by his side despite the agony that Cain brought upon him. Riff would throw his life into the fire for him without a reason at all. It was illogical and even stupid. This blind action infuriated and frightened the teen at the same time. He wanted, no, needed to know what Riff would do, why he would act one way or another.
But the answer eluded him all of Cain's years until that moment.
A single hand pushed Cain away as Riff attempted to give him minutes more to live. But then Cain did something. He did something without thinking or even reasoning it. He just went and grabbed a hold of the other.
There was no reason, and he knew that. It just was what was done in honesty. Without the need of a why.
