Chapter 1:

AN: This is set in 404 B.C. Ancient Greece in Sparta; this is around the time when Sparta was at its prime. AU, so 'real' Shadowhunters and Downworlders aren't in it. Although those titles will be used e.g. Downworlders are the slaves and the Shadowhunters are the 'secret' police, while mundanes are the people in the outlining villages around Sparta. Rating M, because of violence in the future. Also most likely bad language and naughty behavior in some Malec moments... maybe.

Alec's POV

Every year the two kings of Sparta, Robert Lightwood and Stephan Herondale, give a speech to all of the true born Spartan citizens, they then declare war on the Downworlders. They are the Greeks that the Spartans have enslaved, in the battle to take over the whole of the of the Peloponnese Island mass. There had been two wars one that lasted 20 years. The Spartans had won and therefore every year after that, they have decided to wage war on the Downworlders every year for 2 months, the reason for this was to scare the Downworlders enough, that they wouldn't dare try and stage another revolution. This meant taking out the strongest most influential Downworlders.

"Alec get your lazy arse over here right now!"

The sound of Izzy calling from the front door startled me out of my thoughts. "Just coming, wait up" I called to her as I rolled off my bed. I stretched and groaned as my joints popped. I hated the beds made of rough wood from the surrounding trees and the bedding made from heather, which itched like crazy. Everyone in Sparta had exactly the same bed because the law said everyone should be equal, and that material wealth would just distract them from their duty as full time warriors.

As I thought this I wandered to the font door where Izzy stood jumping up and down like she had just bought the newest most deadly whip money can buy. "Izzy, why are you so excited, you hate the speeches, and complain the whole time that they are too long. So long in fact that even I stop listening halfway through." I said rising an eyebrow at my sister who was still jumping up and down like crazy she look so full of energy. Me on the other I really just wanted to go back to my thoughts and maybe even take a nap. Izzy just laughed at me and with a smirk told me how the only reason she was excited was because she couldn't wait to get out there and fight those and I quote "filthy Downworlders". I sighed and started to follow my sister to the Accords hall. The hall was named this because of the pact we had made with the outlining villages, in exchange for their 'freedom' they have to do everything that involved craft and painting so that the true Spartan citizens could focus on their training, our nickname for them is mundanes.

I signed which earned me a funny look from Izzy. Although, personally I think her face is stuck like that. Only ever when she looks or talks to me, she seems perfectly normal when she talks or looks at anyone else people.

"ALEC ARE YOU EVEN LISTENING TO ME!" Izzy shouts in my ear causing me to jump and let a very unmanly squeal.

"By the Angel Izzy what was that for"

"You had that staring-into-space-look you know the one were you're thinking so hard it looks like your heads about to explode" Izzy said excitement making her speak faster than usual.

I just glared at her as I stared to pick up speed to get away from her. Izzy though could easily match me step by step. We walked the rest of the way in silence; every so often, out of corner of my eye I could see Izzy look at me with a huge grin on her face before quickly turning away.

The Accords Hall wasn't majestic like places in the rest of Greece where their buildings have numerous statues of the gods and there walls had paints and Ancient scrip. Does the hall in Sparta have that? No, the hall in Sparta is simple and functional with no extra thought put in on how the building looks, except that it is twice the size of the farm houses everyone lives in, which mostly consist of just a few rooms. Not that we do any farming that's best left to the Downworlders.

The hall had no doors just a double door shaped holes on two of the walls opposite each other. This made it easier for everyone to file into the hall and it's not like anyone would dare steal from us Spartans. First, they would have to make it into Sparta, which is harder than being able to see if you're blind. Okay, slight exaggeration although it is near impossible. On one side of Sparta are mountains covering from sea to sea, on the other side is deadly marsh land before reaching the sea, only a few aka. We true Spartans know the routes that are safe through the marshes. On the mountain ranges there are only a few narrow passages to get to the other side, making Sparta easy to defend and nearly impossible to approach unseen or without being stopped by one of the gauds on duty. Its kill first ask questions later unless you make it very clear you are no threat. Secondly, well they wouldn't get past the first point if they were planning on stealing anyway.

I snapped out of my thoughts as I heard the deep voice of my father- Robert Lightwood, we don't have family's just groups, and our group is our family. The people in my group are called Shadowhunters; we're Sparta's 'secret' police, built up of the best warriors after passing their training. I let my thoughts fade as I listened to the kings that were addressed everyone in the hall.

"... I know you all wish to go and fight but you must remember that you only have two months, so make them count. Oh and don't kill everyone we need some to plough the fields." King Robert said with a cold serious look on his face. Robert has always and will always be cold and unyielding, unlike King Stephan Herondale who is more open-minded.

King Herondale cleared his throat before shouting "LET THE WAR BEGIN"

With those words the whole hall exploded with cheering and the noise of weapons being drawn and waved around. I rolled my eyes at the bloodthirsty looks on every ones faces as they rushed out of the hall; I turned and saw the same expression on my sisters' face. Frowning, I ushered her out of the hall towards the 'secret' polices hideout.

We went to the outskirts of the city, where the hideout is and up one of the mountain slopes until we came to a cluster of trees in the shape of a diamond with trees coming out at the top in a straight line before bending and caring on a few more trees. At a gap in the trees we walk into the clearing. When I looked around I spotted Helen Blackthorn and Aline Penhallow talking closed by the trees opposite where we had walked in, Sebastian Verlac was sitting on one of the fallen trees laying around where the trees had been set up in a square shape around the place we build the fire when we go on scouting/hunting missions. While Jonathan Morgenstern just stood around the edge of the clearing leaning against a tree while sharpening a blade.

We said hello to everyone but Jonathan Morgenstern. The only person who ever seems to talk to him without being rude or cold towards him is Sebastian although mostly because he's just nice to everyone.

There was a rustle in the bushes to my left and I swung around fast enough to avoid the fist aimed my way. "What in the name of Tartarus was that for" I cried at the person who had tried to punch me. Turns out it was, my all time best friend, my partner in crime, my parabatai, Jace Herondale.

"I was testing your reflexes, you really need to be faster I almost got you" Jace said with his usual cool demeanor and the classic Herondale smirk.

I glared at him and called him an Athenian which everyone knows are the worst enemy of the Spartan race, some Spartans even go as far as to say they are demons sent from the deepest part of the underworld to destroy all of humanity.

"Ouch, I'm wounded, someone save me from this beast" Jace said his voice dripping with sarcasm as he put a hand over his heart and a hand to his forehead pretending to fate before a terrifying beast.

"Jace knock it off" I said annoyed at his silly behavior. While this was happening everyone had crowded to sit on the logs at the center of the clearing.

Jace laughed and dragged me over to the logs and we sat down next to each other.

"Now we all know the meaning of this meeting. Let's split up into three groups and prepare to attack at nightfall. First group me and my amazing, but not as amazing as me, parabatai Alec. Second group Helen, Aline and Izzy. This leaves Sebastian and the Athenian sorry Jonathan to make up the third group. All clear good."

"LET THE DOWNWORLDERS SUFFER AND US TO BE VICTORIOUS AND GLORIOUS IN BATTLE" We all shouted, jumping up from where we were sat on the logs.

And with that we all made our way back to our respective homes.

May the gods and our Angel Raziel save our souls. Because we can't afford to lose.
